You know, hats are a lot easier than they seem. Don't be afraid! If you want to start out simple and slow, just knit a flat panel of about 70-90 stitches in worsted weight (or however wide it needs to be to fit around your head) until it's as long as your handspan, draw the yarn through the stitches, sew up the tiny back seam, and voila! It's a hat!

Or you could knit it in the round with decreases. Please believe me when I say that it's easier than you think! You'll like it, I promise! And dude, you can do stockinette in the round WITHOUT PURLING ANYTHING. Now, TELL me that's not worthwhile!
