10. A Handful of Time (Kit Pearson)pojzDecember 23 2009, 05:07:09 UTC
I loved this book so much when I was in grade school, it got me on a time-travel kick and I read pretty much every age-appropriate novel I could find on the subject. Too bad none of them were as good though!! I really need to get a copy of that book!

That's exactly how I feel! I think my grade six teacher had this in our classroom, and it kind of lived in my desk for most of that year. I'm *still* obsessed with time travel type stuff, and it probably does all go back to that. What else did you read?
Have you read The Time-Traveler's Wife? The Eyre Affair? It's mentioned there, more than really part of the story, but I was still drawn to it. And I feel like there was time travel in The Plot to Save Socrates as well, but I don't remember the details. And I'm pretty sure I read some books on the subject this year as well.
I love A Handful of Time! (And Kit Pearson in general, really.) I'm surprised at how many of these you hadn't read before. Voyage of the Dawn Treader is my favourite Narnia, too. But I can't for the life of me decide on which comes second.
And gee, I wonder where you got those David Barber books. ;)
What's the Liuzza Beowulf translation like? I've only read the Heaney.
They're completely different - I had to write an essay comparing the different translations for my Beowulf class, and what I ended up saying was that the Heaney is more about the action, more like you're watching a movie, if that makes sense, whereas the Liuzza is more literal, and more structurally similar to the original text. So the Heaney is a lot more accessible, and easier to use to find a particular part, but I like the Liuzza better in general because it's more faithful to the text.
Thank you! I'm slowly realizing how much work I've set myself up for, but I just have to keep reminding myself that I've wanted this forever. And that it's not about grades or scholarships or anything, but about getting back into practice!
