Sep 06, 2008 08:57

For my culture class, I need to compare and contrast two cultures in my area, and I need your help.

I am looking for anyone that is a member from the Hispanic/Latino cultural group, specifically Mexico, and anyone from the Asian Indian cultural group, specifically India, to answer the following questions:

*hugs* So nice to hear from you!

Sorry I can't help with the questions, but I just wanted to ask you what you thought of the Prydain Chronicles :) I think it was a pretty good series, so I hope you liked them, too! (If not, don't worry, you're still KEWL to me!)

Hey, ESL class! If you have any good resources or tips, please let me know. I ended up teaching the English class at the library and I'd love to have some more background to improve the class ( ... )

Thanks so much for commenting!

Let me explain that last one a bit more...

Individualistic societies place more importance on the independence and growth of the individual. Collectivistic societies are generally thought to place more importance on the group-or the family-rather than the individual. For instance, an individual is typically expected to make sacrifices for the good of the family in collectivistic culture. Where would your consider your "growing up" culture to be...more on the individualistic or more collectivistic? Or whereabouts on the continuum?

Ah, I see. Well, Sunday dinner is a command performance - you'd have to be dead not to show up. There's a saying that you don't become a man until your father dies, which I think reflects the idea of a strong patriarch/matriarch who get to make decisions even for their grown kids, although there are limits to how much the kids actually *do* what their parents say versus humoring them and paying lip service to the idea. :) For instance, my grandfather was dead set against my girl cousins going to college (they're much older than I am, so the issue came up with them first), but my aunt and uncle didn't give in to him.

Hey, welcome back! It's always good to see your smiling face icon around here.

I'm contemplating an ESL course in the near future. There's a super-intense, 5 week course offered in Bournemouth, England that gives you a Level 4 TESL certificate. Can you tell me what that means? Job security in Russia and all that.

And sorry I can't help on the interview questions. I'm 100% Caucasian.

LILAC!!! It's so good to see you!

I was just thinking I need to nudge you. Are you still working with Preschool/Pre-K age kids? If you are, I'd love to pick your brain if you have a moment.
