Greek Mythology: Hera

I've always had a thing with Greek Mythology since I was bought illustrated Greek Mythology books in my mother language. The books themselves were thin and magazine-sized. I had the Gods and Goddesses series, and some others. The illustration was fascinating to me, and still is. It's the kind of drawing you easily relate with Greeks. Of all Greek ( Read more... )

Amen to this interpretation of Hera. It's a chilling, unforgettably tragic perspective of Hera in the sense that she no longer knows how to be as forgiving as the other gods...in fact, I really wish that she would one day destroy Zeus so that he would realize that his actions don't go unpunished. DDDDDD< I, for one, would go crazy if I were in a situation like hers.

It's also for this reason that Socrates was sentenced to death by the Athenian jury (for saying "blasphemously hateful" words of the Greek gods, especially Zeus) and why Plato founded a school of philosophy to talk about what is going wrong in the society of Athens.

It's also for this reason that I tend to ignore a lot of fictional portrayals of female goddesses that are seen as horrible when they didn't really do anything wrong. >( So, yeah, out of all the Greek gods, Hera is my favorite. Strong, yet so tragic.

Hell yeah. Hera's the strongest gods ever. Despite being wronged so many times, she never fails to perform her duties as the Goddess and the Queen. Zeus and the other Gods really took her for granted. I'd go crazy too if I was her, or quit from being a wife and a god altogether. I bet she'll be happier being a mortal.

And the thing is, I read from one article, there's a legend where Hera was killed by Zeus. My reaction was WHAT?!! I refuse to believe that! And I haven't found any confirmation of that, or source of the legend.

Et tu, Jess? Tu aimes Hera? *__*

Eh, sorry, suddenly in mood of French. I'm happy you favor Hera too :D

I know nothing about Greek-slash-Roman gods, aside from what is depicted in the Percy Jackson series and the names of the existing planets in the solar system.

But your description and narration of Hera is really interesting. She sounds like one very tragic goddess, indeed.

This is rather OOT, but my brother and I like to laugh at the fact that the Greeks were picky in giving their gods clothes, don't you think so? I mean, come on, a rag? Covering only *certain* parts of the body? ROFL. Was textile that expensize back then? xDDD~ (Don't get me wrong. I totally understand the ancient Greek concept of art, including the glory of the human body.)

Haha, indeed, rags, or naked :D

And boy, they do look good in either one. The Greeks look like has a thing for human anatomy... or human perfection.

There's quite a summary of the gods here, rather light and humorous but right on: http://www.squidoo.com/kitsgreekmyth

And my fave gods other than Hera is: Hestia (for being modest and staying out of the politics, while remaining inseparable in mortal lives), Hephaestus (for being the kindest gods), Athena (for well, what else to be said of this one? She's the most brilliant mind in Olympus), and Hermes (for his wit :D He's the most fun of all gods).
