how exactly do ratings work? I know Neilsen's got something to do with it, 'cus I'll totally leave my tv on when those shows come on if it'll mean one more viewer haha

Well, I think the ratings are figured in very inaccurate ways, but Nielsen swears that they know what their doing... They have boxes in about 5,000 American homes (yeah, only 5,000) that they randomly select and then screen to ensure that they represent and reflect the greater demographic. The box stays in the home for a certain number of years and it records and transmits all of the television activity in the home. It can't tell how many people are watching a particular thing, just that the tv is on and on which channel. Through complex mathematical formulae, the people at Nielsen extrapolate based on statistical models how many people (really, how many households) in the total population had their tvs turned on at a particular time, and of that number, how many were watching what. Now, the actual numbers that we see when they're done with their calculations are interpreted this way...

Let's say that Supernatural's numbers are reported like this: 1.942 0.6/2. (This was their ratings
