A Trifecta of Mourning: Just A Dream ~ Chapter 2

Rating: PG 13
Word Ct: +
Author Notes/Summary: The shows and characters are not mine but in my mind. I wanted to write a fic based on Carrie Underwood’s “Just a Dream” and this triple threat of what ifs and mourning was what came about. Its un beta’d and rough but I figured what the heck. I know it stops weirdly but my muse died on me…Other than that it’s another Het piece and the pairings and paragraphs are in the order listed above.
Chapter 2
----------He heard the sound first, he felt the impact second, and on three he started falling. --------
Supposed to be the happiest day of his life or maybe that was just for the bride. He had never one for excessive negativity but it had been tough adventure so far. It was hard for him to stay composed in the face of the time consuming wedding plans, the stressful wedding day, and even the bride herself. It had all worked out though. As she walked down the isle in her shimmering pearl gown, he was overcome. It all became suddenly worth it the ceremony went by in a blink of an eye and by the time their lips met, he was filled with a loving anticipation. So much so that not even the noise of the crowd surrounding them could bother him. All his senses were focused on her and as he finally held her, he felt his heart stop.
*His eyes were on her, they fell together as her tears began to fall. *
*Amidst the tears, there was rage and wailing, as their short time stopped. *
*He could see her she couldn’t bring herself to quit him. She cried, wailed, and finally hung onto him as their dreams fell apart.*
--------The day they had planned for all these years was gone in seconds. He had wanted her to have that special day that every woman truly longed for. Now she would have to grieve, a funeral instead of a wedding. Not even with the finishing of the ceremony would things better themselves. Her fallen knight in bloodied armor, the irony in his final moments weren’t lost on him. He’d never cherished this life and now it was gone from him in barely a blink. --------
This was really the end. He’d never imagined falling into the void this way. He’d soon see those he’d lost, his best friend, a mentor or two, and certainly long lost friends and relatives. She’d never have the white picket fence or the two kids and he felt for her. He grieved with even as he took his last breath and his blood pooled about his body.
Amidst the gurgle in his throat, he had to laugh a little. They’d made it to the altar only to have fate throw at them this faltering step. Their friends would have to care for his dark princess now. She’d need the bastard more than ever. The two had something in common now, a fallen love. Hopefully he’d be her everlasting love but really, he knew better. There’d always been numerous suitors waiting to soil the black linens in her coffin. How poetic was it that her coffin wasn’t the last one for him, to soon he thinks. Too soon.
Retirement didn’t work nearly as well as they’d hoped. He had thought he would have years with her not a few mere months. The job had once again taken too much of his life and now was taking her love away from him as well. He could see her being stoic, soldiering on. The team would be there for her, she’d move back to Colorado more than likely. She’d need Cassie more so than ever before. They’d grieve together for a while but hopefully when his demanded hundred days were up she’d remember but move on. He could only hope, only dream.
*He had played the fool for to long.*
*If only he could go back, he’d be smarter, gentler, and more loving. *
*He would be everything he had denied them both for so long*
---------His death had been senseless. He didn’t go out in battle. He didn’t die defending anyone. He died in her arms and as his life bled out around her, all he felt was regret at his stupidity and as his breath labored and faded away he knew he'd love her in his wasted life and had hopes to waste their love no more in the next.-----------
