We've had some Hitleriffic items in the P&D -- but when you read it in the middle of a bunch of modern news, you just say, "oh, that Hitler" and let is pass by. Very different when you're immersed in the time.

In today's paper, we got this:

• Miss Edna Burkhart, a Yankton College graduate who spent considerable time in Germany, was the speaker on yesterday’s program at the regular weekly meeting of the Yankton Kiwanis club. Miss Burkhart discussed conditions in Germany under the Hitler regime and explained the incidents that have led up to the present situation there. She said that the German people appear quite contented under Hitler’s leadership at the present time, the first that has given them any real unity since the World War.

And then in today's news, we get things like this :

• A sheriff’s office report was received at 6:13 a.m. Thursday of a roof lying in the road near 1200 Meadow View.

• A report was received at 3:52 a.m. Friday that someone had apparently lit a partial roll of toilet paper on fire and thrown it on the street in the 2200 block of Douglas.

- What a coincidence (Miss Edna Burkhart talking about how things are in Nazi Germany).

- A roof? Maybe the sheriff should check his records & see if someone reported losing the roof on their house.

I think part of my reaction came from seeing the photos.
