“I can’t believe we agreed to do this.”
Sam looked over at Devon and raised an eyebrow slightly. “It’s just Nicky, Devon. It’s not like we haven’t babysat for him before.”
“This isn’t babysitting, Sam. This is taking an already sugar-infused five year-old and infusing him with more sugar.”
Serena had to work and Andy was laid up with a broken leg and that didn’t exactly bode well for their five year-old’s Halloween. Nicky had been crushed up until Sam agreed to take him out trick-or-treating for the holiday, and it hadn’t taken a lot of convincing to get Devon to go along with. Even after all this time, Sam still didn’t have a hard time talking Devon into things. He’d learned that a long time ago with white water rafting and while his ideas have gotten less dramatic since then, there were some things that Devon was still going to complain about.
“He’ll be fine,” Sam sighed, knocking on the Rhodes’ door before turning back to Devon. “He’s just a kid, and you’ve dealt with kids before. And how hyped up on sugar can he be? He hasn’t even gone out yet.”
“Still. This doesn’t seem like the way we wanted to spend our evening. The way I wanted to spend our evening.”
“I know. But he’s also five-we’ll be done before primetime TV even starts.”
“We better be.”
Just as he finished speaking, the door flew open, and a small blond boy wearing what could only be described as a super villain’s costume. “I am Olaf the Destroyer!” he roared. “RAAAAAAAAAR!”
Sam smirked slightly. “Nice costume, Nicky.”
The kid grinned. “Thanks! Mommy helped me make it.” He then paused for a moment, before looking the two men over. “Where are your costumes?”
Devon blinked. “We needed costumes?”
He turned to look at Sam, and Sam just shrugged a bit before holding up his camera slung around his neck. “Don’t look at me. I’m the camera guy. I don’t need a costume.”
Nicky seemed to accept that as an excuse, but then he turned his attention back to Devon, looking expectantly at the older man for an answer. Devon stared back at him for a moment, trying to figure out what the kid was getting at, before shaking his head slightly.
“Sorry, buddy. No costume for me.”
Nicky looked almost appalled at the suggestion. “But it’s Halloween! You have to have a costume!”
Devon still looked flustered. He hadn’t been expecting this kind of ambush. Sam knew that. And yet, he was more standing back, amused, as opposed to coming to his husband’s defense. “Well-what do you want me to do, kiddo? It’s not like I can go home and change.”
There was a bit of a pause as Nicky though this one over, before the sound of Andy’s voice came from the living room. “Hey, buddy why don’t you go through Mom’s closet? See if you can rustle up something for Devon.”
Nicky’s face lit up a bit before he grinned and grabbed Devon’s hand. “Yeah, c’mon! You can be my sidekick!”
Devon opened his mouth to protest, but the five year-old was already pulling him off in the direction of the master bedroom. Sam just smirked, making his way around the corner to the living room, looking over at where Andy was sitting on the couch, leg propped up on a few pillows. Sam settled into one of the open chairs before giving Andy a look.
“You’re really missing this, aren’t you?”
“I’ve always been a giant kid. You know I love Halloween, man.”
Sam watched him for a minute, before smirking. “That’s not the part you’re missing.”
Andy was quiet for a minute, flipping through the channels quietly before looking over at his friend again. “Make sure you get lots of pictures, alright?”
“Will do, man,” Sam nodded, turning as Nicky and Devon reappeared, Devon covered with oddly done make-up and a look that Sam couldn’t hide the smile on, bringing up the camera to cover his face and get the shot instead. “Starting with this one.”
