Jonathan's super-geeky. Like. Intensely so. So much that he might accidentally tell your characters that they're fictional (provided it was released prior to 2002, since that's the year he's from). I can see where this might cause problems, so have a permission post that I'm essentially plagiarizing from
likevegeta.

Can he recognize them: Sure.
Anything huge he would know about your character that I can't get from a quick Google search?: He's a mutant, he's blue, he can teleport, he's German, and in the comic he's a devout priest (and possibly recently killed? idk, I'd have to check). Of note he might be a little confused about him being different than his comic book counterpart, as it's less likely Jonathon will know about this version.
Dos: Anything, really. :P
Don'ts: Don't mention his father.

Anything huge he would know about your character that I can't get from a quick Google search?: He's a bit giant Dinoturtle thing that kidnaps Princess Peach regularly and is always thwarted by Mario. What else do you need to know?
Dos: Anything, really. :P
Don'ts: Nothing really.

AND ALSO I was going to make a note of how I didn't think Jonathan would be able to recognize a non-Hal-or-Kyle Green Lantern in general BUT Wikipedia tells me John's been quasi-prominent since the 80s. Oops. I AM LEARNING SO MUCH.

Fandom: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Can he recognize them: Nope, the game (Japanese & English) was released in 2009.
Anything huge he would know about your character that I can't get from a quick Google search?: 17 year old teenager from Tokyo, see cousin as brother figure, can do magical stuff with a DS COMP (courtesy of said cousin), have demonic pieces of a fallen demon god inside his soul.
Dos: Uh, anything?
Don'ts: Like it's mentioned, the game came out in 2009, so he wouldn't know anything about DeSu.

Fandom: Tales of Destiny (it's an RPG and a manga! He's from the game, though)
Can he recognize them: Sure, if he's played/read it.
Anything huge he would know about your character that I can't get from a quick Google search?: He's a hotblooded shounen hero with a talking sword, man. And he does some cool stuff.
Dos: Anything goes.
Don'ts: Nada, bruddah.
Name: Gold
Fandom: Pokémon Special (i.e., the manga)
Can he recognize them: Sure, though, unless he reads scanlated manga online, he'd only recognize Gold as his video game counterpart.
Anything huge he would know about your character that I can't get from a quick Google search?: Again, dependent on if he's read the manga, but anything important can be found.
Dos: Anything goes, Gold can always use a bigger ego.
Don'ts: Nope.

Fandom: Final Fantasy VI
Can he recognize them: Sure. (Though it might take him a moment, given the way the graphics were when FFVI first came out.)
Anything huge he would know about your character that I can't get from a quick Google search?: I don't think so.
Dos: I admit it, I'm not a fan of fourth-walling, outside brief crack events. I'm more likely to go with it if he focuses on her world/whatnot rather than her specifically. Fanboying is also fine, though she will probably just shy away at that. Mentioning her half-esper nature/her past with the Empire is also possible, but yeah, she won't react well to any of that being brought up. Just so you know.
Don'ts: Don't canon-puncture (tell her anything about the World of Ruin) or tell her she's from a video game.

Can he recognize them: Sure, why not. (Though yeah, same issue with the graphics back then.)

Name: Alex
Fandom: Golden Sun
Can he recognize them: The first game in the series was released in 2001, so yes!
Anything huge he would know about your character that I can't get from a quick Google search?: I'm pretty sure finding anything about him isn't that hard.
However! Most of the information you'll find about Alex with a Google search will likely include his involvement in the second game, Golden Sun: The Lost Age. The Japanese version of that one was released in June 2002, but the US one wasn't released until 2003, so I'm not entirely sure if he'd know about it ( ... )
