Barenaked Ladies @ Universal Studios Orlando Mardi Gras - 3/7/09

Mar 10, 2009 01:11

As my (slightly early) birthday ~thing this year, I'd been planning to see Barenaked Ladies at Universal Studios Orlando's Mardi Gras Saturday night. And then, as you may know, Steven Page left the band by mutual agreement about a week and a half before the show. I was distraught at first, and then a mix of sad/excited, because still, BNL and I ( Read more... )

Ugh, I can't believe I have been a fan for so long, IN CANADA NO LESS, and never seen them live. Thanks for the awesome write up!

Wow, you need to fix that. Whatever I may say about any other bands, I always have to keep coming back to the simple fact that BNL continues to be THE best band I've ever seen live. They are all such ridiculous musicians (and I mean that in the 'very talented' and 'full of silliness' ways!) and comedians and FRIENDS that all love what they do and doing it with each other. They are unbelievably better live than in studio, so the next time they're near you and you get a chance, GO. SO SO WORTH IT.

(How is it possible that I don't have a BNL icon yet?)

Awesome description of the concert :) I love that you love the BNL! They are pretty much my favorite band EVER. I got to see them live once, and yes it was AMAZING. If only they would just tour someplace remotely near me! UGH. But sad there's no more Steve :(

Thanks! Yes, I love them lots and lots. I've been lucky enough to see them four times in three states, even. \o/ It IS sad about no more Steve. But the boys will carry on!

Yay videos! I'm glad they're continuing and that they still have their same sense of humor. :) But I think it'll be better all around when they get in the studio to do their own new songs. It'll feel more right with something fresh and them and not be so much like they're just trying to plug in the gaps.

Kevin is fantastic and talented, but his voice is very, very different. I'm not sure if I can get used to him singing pure Steve songs like Sound of Your Voice. (Full version here.) His songs tend to not be among my favorites anyway though. :/ Sorry, Kevin! I'll wait and see how it turns out with the new mix though.

Jim is crazy skinny. His voice is kind of different too, but not as quirky as Kevin's, so it sounds like it blends a little better with Ed's.

Sigh. I'll just wait for new songs and hope they come somewhere near the middle of nowhere that is here on the next tour. Thanks for posting the review! I hope it's a sign of good things to come that it went well and the fans are being supportive.

Yeah, I think you're right there. It'll feel better for everyone once they have new stuff that's just theirs, instead of playing around the Steve-shaped hole.

It was definitely different to hear Kevin sing those, yes. It's just not the same. But we love him, we do!

Jim! He just makes me grin so hard watching him live, the most of all of them, I think. And yeah, he does work better with Ed's voice. I think our show was them trying some things out, so maybe as they work through more, Jim will try some more for those kinds of reasons instead of Kevin?

Ed mentioned there was going to be a pretty epic US fall tour, so I'll cross my fingers for a city even remotely close to you! *crosses*

You were so close. It sounds awesome and like they're getting through the lineup change. Glad to see it was good an early birthday time.

I was! We got their early-ish and camped out in the grass. As soon as they started, everyone stood up. No long lines on pavement and pushing and shoving and scene girls. I wish every show could be like BNL shows that way. *SIGH*

They were amazing, if not a little uneasy at first. But it was great and I'm so excited for what's to come, while at the same time still so sad about Steve. :-/
