i like kink because it makes you have to check in with yourself, your partner, and your peers. i don't do this nearly enough yet, but i believe it's important.

i'm talking about that process in the other direction. not "i want to hit people with things, so i should be aware" but rather "i want to be aware, so i'll hit people with things."

it's waaay too reductive (my new favorite word) to describe what BDSM does for me completely, but it's one facet.

Precisely. It won't work if you're not aware. :) My words, to me, implied both directions.

I think she might have been trying to say that awareness doesn't work without(/is encouraged by) BDSM, or something comparable.

Also, plenty of non-aware people hit each other with things. But I wouldn't call that working.
