Room 313 [late afternoon]

Greg? Had not had a good morning. At all.

But a good way to take care of that was by working. So he had set up his microscope and was carefully peering through it at the short, dark hair he had been given a few weeks ago.

The door was cracked open, though, in spite of how absorbed he may have seemed.

Alec, hearing music through a not-quite-closed door, knocked and pushed it open a little further, peeking inside. "Hey, neighbor."

"You went camping in a restaurant?" Alec eyed Greg, deciding it wasn't out of the realm of possiblity.

"No, but we stopped in one and then we got kicked out and there was a mean girl and the girls didn't go in the pit with us," Greg said.

"They don't know what fun is," Alec said authoritatively. "Jaye won't fly because she thinks she'll explode or something."

[like_a_sponge]

"She probably would," Greg said wisely.

"I wouldn't let her," Alec said, frowning.

[like_a_sponge]

"Yeah, I wouldn't let Isabel blow herself up either but apparently she can take care of herself," Greg said just a touch bitterly, peering through the microscope again.

Alec arched an eyebrow at the back of Greg's head, then shrugged to himself. "You want another hair to look at that might be kind of different?"

Greg looked up. "Ooh?" he asked, eyeing Alec's hair. "Really?"

Smirking, he bowed his head so Greg could reach from his seat. "Go ahead."

[like_a_sponge]

Greg plucked a hair and carefully placed it on a slide. "Do you know what I'm looking for?"

Alec shrugged, leaning over with one hand on the back of Greg's chair as he watched. "Take a look and tell me what you see, first."

Greg adjusted the lens and positioned the slide, then paused.

"Do you have a cat?"

"Nope," Alec said, amused.

[like_a_sponge]

"Well, that's weird, because this looks like a cat hair," Greg said thoughtfully. "Only kinda crossed with a human hair. Or something."

"That's right," he agreed helpfully, grinning over Greg's shoulder.
