Dean lay still trying not to wake the two men beside him. He had to figure out what he was going to say to his brother. He loved Sam. He didn’t know how not to. Sam had been his since that terrible day that changed everything. His brother didn’t know what it was like to be an ordinary happy family. Dean had four years of normal. Sam couldn’t remember and Dean couldn’t forget. When you’re four there’s only two things that really matter, your mom and your dad. Dean watched his mother burn. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t scream. Then his dad had placed his baby brother in his arms.

Dean hadn’t wanted a baby brother in the first place. He didn’t want to share. When Sammy was born he most distinctly had not changed his mind. But when his Dad said ‘take care of him. Run!’ Dean ran. All those frozen muscles moved, and he ran as fast as he could. He stood on the lawn clutching Sam and watched their house burn. In the interminable time before their dad came outside, he didn’t know if either parent would survive. Dean was only four and he never wanted a little brother, but if his parents were both gone, then he was the only one left to take care of Sammy and he was just going to have to do it.

Dean let the memories wash over him. He wasn’t big on all that emotional talking stuff. Sam wasn’t either, but Dean was worse. Still, he told Sam the big things, the ones that really mattered. His memories of standing on the lawn were one of the few things Dean had never told his brother, in fact he’d never told anyone. He’d had no idea of social services, or that their might be relatives to take you in. Dean’s only big secret was that at four he planed to raise Sam on his own. He’d still raised Sam in a lot of ways, but his Dad had been there for food and shelter and a whole lot of other things.

So Dean loved Sam. They both knew that part of what they were to each other was born of the circumstances they lived in. The idea that there might be room for more for some one outside of the world they lived in. Having a place to go that wasn’t part of the hunting world was something the Winchester boys both really wanted.

Dean lay in the soft hotel bed, the room filled with the muted early morning light, his mind filled with these memories of Sam. He kept coming back to the idea that maybe Charlie was just what they’d been looking for.

Sam woke up and rolled over. He was glad to see Charlie was still a sleep. He really needed to talk to Dean. He sat up and leaned over to shake his brother only to find Dean was already awake.

“We need to talk.” Sam whispered.

Dean nodded and gestured towards the bathroom before rolling out of bed.

Sam carefully slid out of bed to follow his brother. He hoped he wouldn’t have to do all the work here. He’d had to make all the first moves. That’s not say that they hadn’t talked about it. They’d talked plenty, but Dean was older, had half raised him. Sam had to make the first move. These days they were equals. He hoped it stayed that way. He hoped Dean wasn’t having second thoughts. The issue wasn’t the fact they were brothers and lovers, but that they lived in each others pockets. It wasn’t healthy, but they lived and worked together. There was no way to have space. Sam need a place to check his head, to have more than Sam&Dean 24/7/365.

The two boys stared at each other. Dean waited for Sam to speak.

Sam hated having to lead so much but he understood. “This is all new and we need to treat it that way but I’d be interested in passing back through LA.”

Dean launched him self at Sam, wrapping his arms around his brother. “I love you.” he whispered fiercely. Dean didn’t say the words often, but he always meant them.

“I know.” Sam answered. He knew all the pieces his brother didn’t say. Like Charlie wasn’t about not loving Sam, it was maybe about loving Sam too much.

“So we’ll ask him?” Dean said, stepping out of Sam’s arms.

“We’ll ask, but we have to give him time to think.” Sam answered.

At that moment Dean’s phone rang in the bedroom and he ran to answer it. Dean didn’t get phone calls unless they were important.

“Hello?” Dean answered the phone.

“Dean?” Dean knew that voice. It was a voice he’d told never to call him again.

“Lindsey.”

“We need your help. I wouldn’t call unless it was important. You know that.” Lindsey explained.

“You want me to help you and Angel?” Dean clearly didn’t like the idea of helping his ex and the new boyfriend.

“Not Angel. This actually about him. If you can help I’ll explain when we see you. We just need a place to go that’s not here and time to make some plans. Please.”

“Man you called at the right time. I’m actually in good mood. So yeah I suppose I’ll help or at least meet up and see if I can.” Dean laughed. “So guess where I am?”

“I wouldn’t know.”

“LA”

Lindsey laughed. “So what dive are you staying at?”

“Actually we’re at a nice place. But we have to check out by eleven.”

“We?”

“My brother Sam is with me.”

“So where can we meet?”

Dean hung up the phone to see Sam leaning against the bathroom door frame watching him. Charlie was still asleep. Sam raised an eyebrow as if to say ‘what’s up’. Dean gestured at the bathroom and followed his brother back in.

Charlie woke up to Sam and Dean’s voices, to find the two men wrapped around him, one on each side.

“Morning” Sam smiled.

“Don’t talk.” Dean followed his words with a kiss. “Something’s come up. We need to go help an old friend of mine.”

“We’d like to come back afterwards.” It was clear Sam was asking even though it wasn’t a question.

“We were thinking we might pass through the LA area more often.” Classic Dean flirting.

“Just think about it.” Sam was being serious. “As long as you want us to come back after we help Dean’s friend. Just tells us that.”

Charlie nodded his head. Then he couldn’t have spoken anyway. Dean was kissing him something fierce. He missed Dean’s white knuckled grip on Sam’s hand.
