I was a huge Star Wars geek from 1995-1999, and when I saw Episode One, it kind of killed over my obsession. I'm not going to bash the new trilogy (especially since I only saw the two new episodes once each) since I don't know too much about them, but it's just to let you know that I've been out of the SW loop for a while. The curved handle is actually better for sword-fighting/fencing. Count Dooku was able to defeat Obi-wan and Anakin because they were swordsmen, while Dooku was a fencer. I believe the he developed the handle to better suit what would take place- fighting other lightsaber weilding people. The different techniques are used for optimal fighting in certain conditions and since there weren't really any sith, the jedi only used their sabers for deflecting blaster bolts more than anything.
