Tilda Swinton as the Doctor [Ask the Interwebs]

As many of you know, I have long supported Tilda Swinton as the next Doctor. Having recently seen a photoshop of Hugh Laurie (in full House mode) as The Doctor, I think I need some counter propoganda. Thanks to not-my-facebook-friend Angela, I was pointed to these picturesAnyone enough of a Photoshop wizard to get a TARDIS in there and Doctor these ( Read more... )

I had an idea the other day: the Doctor regenerates into a woman (Tilda Swinton is the one everyone talks about, but I favour Helen Mirren, who's actually said she wants the part, and is certainly not androgynous).

But he feels uncomfortable with this, because Gallifreyan gender identity is in fact NOT fluid like that, and he still feels internally that he's a man. Suddenly, the Doctor is transgendered.

THAT would break down some barriers!

(If done well. Sadly, it seems unlikely that it would be.)

Wait, everyone talks about Swinton? I thought I've been a lone voice crying out for that for 10 years.

I fully support Mirren in role, by the way.

Back in the 80's, after Tom Baker started the hinting that the next Doctor might be female, I thought of a way to test the waters which would be "safe".

Hire a Brother/Sister team. Regenerate (which is so often "unstable" when the Doctor does it) into the sister. By the end of the 4-episode opener, the regeneration "completes" and turn into the brother. Have the Doctor complain he was just getting used to being a woman. See the reaction from the audience. If positive, plan for the future.

As for your idea, I love it, but I can't see it happening. They chickened out on a black Doctor, and I see woman and minority happening long before we get as bold as transgendered.

Also, as you say, handling it *well* would likely be beyond them.
