Candy had come almost directly from work; she kept strange hours. Every day was theoretically supposed to start at eight and end at five, but if something came up then something happened. She hadn't even had time to change, so she met him in her work wardrobe -- low-heeled shoes, black pants, and a black long-sleeve shirt with a cutout that gave a decent view of her collarbone and the tops of her breasts. Appealing, but not slutty. She wasn't like that.

"Peter," she said with a smile as she came to sit down across from him. "Good to finally meet you."

She chuckled. "Well, to be fair, I've always been out here, you just weren't paying attention," she teased playfully.

He smiled again, looking amused. "Oh I was paying attention, just not looking in the right places. Especially since it's Vegas.. there's so much to see."

"Tell me about it. I've lived here all my life and I still haven't seen everything," she replied laughing. "And I know you won't believe this, but this is like...the most sober male attention I've had in a long time."

"Really?" he asked, cocking his head to the side a little curiously. "I do find it hard to believe. You're a very attractive nice woman... I mean you should have a lot more guys chasing after you. I mean that in a good way."

She chuckled. "Thanks, but no, it's a fact."

"That's unfortunate, really. I think a beautiful woman should get the attention she deserves," he said with a small smile. "And from sober men, not drunk ones."

She chuckled. "Tell that to my friend Julie. She's the poolside bartender. She gets it twenty-four seven. It's easier to take because she already has a decent boyfriend."

"Does that make it harder for you because you don't?" he asked. "She sort of proves my point, she has a boyfriend, so she gets the attention she deserves."

"I don't worry too much." She shrugged. "I figure the right man will come along when he does."

"That's really the best way to look at it," he said with a small nod.

"I don't have the time to whinge over it and watch Lifetime." She grinned back. "Besides, I've got some pretty good guys that I work with to keep me company in the meanwhile. What about you? Who's in your life?"

"My life?" he asked with a small smile. Peter paused to take another sip of his wine. "No girlfriend. I work for my father, I live in New York, and my brother is convinced I need to get him a painting of the future while I'm here. Fairly normal I think," he continued, with more than a hint of sarcasm.

She arched an eyebrow. "The future, huh?" she said, thinking his brother was a little nuts on that count. "Sounds fun," and she was being equally sarcastic.

He smiled a little, knowing exactly what she meant. "Yeah, I agree with you. I don't believe him either, but he won't leave it alone. I might as well get the painting for him, then maybe he'll shut up about it."

"Well, good luck." Candy smiled. "I can't say I have anything interesting to say. I'm an only child, both my parents moved back East. So it's just me and my friends out here now."
