My thoughts on Mickey and Martha

Feb 22, 2010 02:16

*Waves nervously* Hello first time posting but I've been lurking and I thought this is a great place to propose my discussion question about people's thoughts on Mickey and Martha and eventually other things regarding S3.

In a sad twist of Irony, RTD got it right )

My feelings on the subject remain mixed. I hate the rushed nature of the pairing - the fact that RTD, so he says, only put them together so Martha's surname would be Smith-Jones, a reflection of her first ever episode (I mean, seriously, WTF kind of reasoning is THAT?!) RTD's logical fail is, as usual, massive and insulting. And there's also a strong suspicion in my mind that RTD took Martha out of UNIT so Moffat wouldn't have to have Martha in S5 or later unless he *really* wanted her in there - which I don't see happening any time soon ( ... )

THIS!! RTD has no concept of sensitivity or romance. *RTD: Romance. You're doing it wrong* I definitely thought it was a step up from goo-goo eyes over her engagement ring but i do agree that marriage isn't the only possible route for happiness for any female character and I wish there was a greater push for this by writers on tv in general. But I agree they are hot, kick-ass, and defenders of the earth. It'll suffice (though Ten would be more fulfilling ;D)

There's also the awkward fact that both Mickey and Martha had been rejected by Rose and the Doctor respectively, and there's that awful idea in the back of many people's minds that both were rejected for not being white enough...

Tell me about it ugh Also RTD and the writers have no concept of Racial Sensitivity *See Daleks in Manhattan and LOTL*

I squealed when I saw Mickey and Martha together, but I'm not sure if that was just because Martha's my favourite companion and I wasn't expecting to see her come back. But I did think it was nice that they were together. :)

I guess what it really comes down to is whether you prefer Martha's pastede-on marriage to offcamera Schwietzer or Martha's pastede-on marriage to the other awesome underappreciated regular of color. I chose the former primarily because I'd already written it into my fanfiction, and because pairing her with Mickey is just yet another symptom of Davies grasping to prove he values the character without diverting his attention too much, but either way seems flat to me.

I thought there were reams of dodgy issues, from race to the fact it's two underdeveloped relationships for Martha...

but on a gut level? SO RIGHT. They make a fantastic pairing, they've both grown independent of others and can be totally hardcore; they're also still capable of MAJOR DORKERY. And I'm a sucker for the whole Smith & Jones partnership thing, especially freelance style. And my favourite characters in the whoniverse hooking up can't a bad thing.

I think you mean two UNdeveloped relationships - because the one with Tom wasn't developed, any more than the one with Mickey has been. At least we've seen Mickey and Martha together as a married couple - we never saw Martha and Tom, post-rewind year, together - not even a lousy flashback!

Well, in the sense that with Tom, at least we got a sense of where she was with him - they were still only going out in Torchwood, but sometime before he took for Africa they got engaged, and you could fanwank an awful lot about it. Plus, we did see them together in LotL.

It's a bit disappointing the first time we saw Mickey and Martha talk to each other, they were married, and it makes me yearn for the interactions-that-never-were in CoE. Still, at least with these two we know their stories come together to make a lot of sense, even if it does wholly rely on previously established characterisation.

Well we didn't see Tom and Martha as a couple - they were just two characters travelling together and he was helping her. At least, we've seen Martha and Mickey together as an actual couple, even if RTD skipped their entire back story.

Let's face it, though - neither situation is really acceptable. Martha gets the shitty end of the stick, whichever way you look at it, because RTD wanted to pair everyone off before Ten died - and logic be damned.

I agree with you, as rushed as it was, they are a great pairing.

I don't know why RTD had to marry off both Donna and Martha, and sorry Rusty, but the day I refer to Martha as Martha Smith-Jones, is the day I'm cast as the new companion, lol.

But it was a happy accident that the pairing works, I have enormous fondness for both characters, and they both deserved better than the treatment they got, and it is of huge concern, that the two black companions, are the ones that were treated most shoddily by both The Doctor, and the show itself in general.

She's Dr Martha Jones FOREVER! Smith-Jones my arse! No disrespect to Mickey, whom I love dearly (and who was always WAY too good for Rose, anyway), but No, just Dr Martha Jones. It's ridiculous to combine their names like that when plenty of married women these days retain their maiden names.

Exactly, I wish someone would by RTD a book on feminism, then clobber him round the head with it.

LOL I was going to settle for smacking him upside the head with one of his "Special" scripts ('cos I figure they're pretty weighty) but the feminism book's a much better idea!
