THE DOCTOR CRUSHED BY MARTHA'S CHOICE tboneli January 2 2010, 08:21:45 UTC
Ten’s reaction to seeing Martha with Mickey was stunning! When Mickey called out to Ten, The Doctor stood as if in disbelief and departed as if he was devastated. Without a word, The Doctor’s shock (& pain) of losing Martha screams through his silence! A very poignant moment indeed - it served as a powerful testimony to The Doctor’s connection to Martha. What a vindication of those who knew The Doctor/Martha relationship (while not what it could have, or should have been) was never completely unrequited or a one-sided. The Doctor had feelings for Martha too ... but too little, too late. When I saw this scene unfold, I immediately thought of Shakespeare’s Othello, with all its attendant racial and sexual subtexts.

Sorry, but I totally failed to get that from that scene - and I'm a huge Martha/Doctor shipper. The Doctor's expression, after Mickey calls out 'Hey', was too distant to see that he was devastated or disbelieving... I think the Doctor was actually just glad to save Martha's life from the Sontaran and I'm sure he's happy that Martha and Mickey are happy together after they way he and Rose treated the pair of them.

The Martha/Mickey relationship is totally pasted on, but if she has to be with anyone, I'm happy she's with Mickey who will definitely love and cherish her, instead of buzzing off overseas to work.

I didn't get that from the scene either. Not at all. I'm a big Doctor/Martha shipper myself. I think he was a little preoccupied with the fact that he was dying to really be crushed by something as simple as the fact that Martha is with Mickey. If he knew that she was going to die there which I assume is why he showed up at that exact moment to stop it, I'm sure he already knew about her being married to Mickey, too. Any devastated look that he had was all to do with the fact that he was dying, and he never really said anything to Jack either. I think because he feels like he failed the pair of them but it was all his way of saying goodbye.

I think it might've been a mixture of both, and possibly that she was obviously NOT in Unit and carrying a stonking gun. Respected Medical Director Martha Jones doesn't carry a gun, 'cause she's an awesome Doctor and a peacemaker. If it was one thing about Martha Jones we could trust, THAT was it.

RTD, you suck.
