I have not as yet seen this episode because, sadly, academia > fandom right now, but I gather from spoilers that ( Cut for spoilers. Obviously )

It's actually announced through a news report - we don't see Martha at all. Sarah Jane saved the hospital, but she died also.

I am so excited for Martha's return next week! Even though she'll be in danger and all that, she's going to be brilliant.

Anyone got a transcript of the news report, then?

...That's going to make rewatching Smith and Jones kinda creepy, though.

I had the same thought. I don't think I'll view the episode in the same light again knowing what could have happened if the Doctor hadn't been there. I actually rewatched Smith & Jones a few days ago - and I definitely wasn't expecting it to be referenced in this episode.

I nearly DIED from the squee when we heard that. This isn't a full transcript but basically Morgenstern was the only survivor from the hospital and he said that he was given the last oxygen tank by Martha before she died too.

It was on the news that Donna, Slyvia and Wilf were watching so there wasn't much of a reaction really.

But see! Our girl's still mind blowingly awesome without The Doctor there (but we all knew that already *g*).

Totally agree. Even though she died, it still proved that she was already awesome without even meeting the Doctor.

Morgenstern says: "And there were these creatures, like rhinos, talking rhinos... we couldn't breathe, we were running out of air. A colleague of mine gave me the last oxygen tank. Martha-- M-martha Jones. And she--she died."

You don't get much of a reaction, because they're watching it on the news and Donna doesn't know Martha, but Oliver sounds really shaken up about it. So instead of the geeky fanboy you get at the end of Smith And Jones, you get a really upset young man. :(

There were audible gasps when that scene played out. I love how the world without the Doctor is completely fucked, but the people that "touched" or would have touched in one way or another still were incredibly awesome and brave. He really does recognize the best of the best.

Now where is the Martha/Sarah Jane fic?

*shakes computer*
