The recommendations topic today is - gen: darkness.
Angst, horror, darkly disturbing - anything that doesn't have a primary focus on a relationship and entails the sorrowful, harsh and/or macabre.

Rating/Notes/Warnings:Why I recommend this fic: Remember, you can rec the same fic as someone else, either by commenting to their comment with why you like that same fic, or still using it in your own comment.
5 or less fics per person - even if you're agreeing with someone else's rec.

The Sleeping Man by Andromeda (
fiandyfic)
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Green Cortina, 900 words.
Recommendation Comment: This is the series subverted - which I guess, isn't a surprise, given the author. It's a really interesting and different take on what could have happened regarding Sam's 'accident'. Maya is strong and fantastic in this.
DNA by Andromeda (
fiandyfic)
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Green Cortina, 400 words.
Recommendation Comment: Okay, so, is it bad of me to rec a story inspired by one of my own? Probably. But I actually think Andy does the concept more justice. It's darker than my one, and has a thousand little paradoxes. I love the construct.
all you zombies by
dorcas_gustineRating/Notes/Warnings: Green Cortina, 1,363 words, Spoilers for 2.08.
Recommendation Comment: The Sam/Annie is so mild in this, that I had to rec it here. This is so dark, it makes my heart ache. The style is phenomenal and the concept is deeply disturbing. The story builds, piece by piece, until you're hoping that what you think is happening is wrong. But it isn't. Beautiful.

The Northwich Horror by
m31andy (
fiandyfic)
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Red Cortina. 2050 words. Spoilers for everything, incl Ashes to Ashes.
Recommendation Comment: Inspired by the film Threads, this is a chilling account of what Sam’s actions have done to the World.
Waste Not, Want Not by
lozenger8Rating/Notes/Warnings: PG-13. 360 words. No spoilers.
Recommendation Comment: Erm… what can I say without giving anything away? It’s short, but not sweet.
Samhain by
tatlovestea (a.k.a
lackadaisydilly)
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Brown Cortina. 730 words. Spoilers for 2.08
Recommendation Comment: Not quite an alternative to the ending, but this could have happened after the credits rolled.

I Have Followed You Into The Dark by
pink_bagelsRating/Notes/Warnings: Green Cortina, spoilers for 2.08
Recommendation Comment: Sam chose to stay in 1973, and so he does. Forever. It's a chilling concept and a wonderful remedy for the LoM finale blues.

Moment of Truth by
bistokidsRating/Notes/Warnings: Green Cortina, spoilers for 2.07
Recommendation Comment: The descriptions are so vivid, Morgan is unbelievably creepy and, erm,
bistokids' fics are always amazing.
The Patient by
liveforforeverRating/Notes/Warnings: Brown Cortina, implied character death
Recommendation Comment: Sam is literally insane. And the imagery is beautiful.

m31andy, who said: There are very few Sam-goes-mad fics in the fandom. There should be more. This is one of the best. Lovely use of colour imagery and some stunning turns of phrase.

Starving on the Jump Down by
hmpfRating/Notes/Warnings: Red Cortina for graphic imagery, post 2.08, character death. A not very happy look at the ending. 375 words.
Recommendation Comment: Hmpf has a way of placing words just so. This is a beautiful piece that packs a hell of a punch in less than 500 words.
Qu'est ce que c'est? by
lozenger8Rating/Notes/Warnings: Blue Cortina for language and violent themes. 1,200 words.
Recommendation Comment: What can I say? This is one of the ultimate evil!Sam fics. It inspired me to write in this fandom and still gives me the warm fuzzies.
Straw by
jantalaimonRating/Notes/Warnings: Red Cortina. Spoilers for 1.01 only. 10,000 words.
Recommendation Comment: Surprising, twisty and turny with a hell of an ending, this fic really didn't deserve what I did to it later on!

Actual Reality by
lozenger8Rating/Notes/Warnings: PG-13, disturbing themes, 390 words.
Recommendation Comment: I love disturbed/evil/psycho Sam and this is one of the best stories of the genre that I've read. It's oppressively dark and Loz pulls off Sam's madness beautifully.

Back to Normal by
flurblewigRating/Notes/Warnings: PG 13
Recommendation Comment: Rendered completely AU by now, of course, yet scarily prescient, this fic takes us to a very similar place as 2.08 in some ways, yet dares more openly to make us uneasy about Sam's choice.
Save, Quit, Continue? by
flurblewigRating/Notes/Warnings: PG 13
Recommendation Comment: A plausible alternative take on what happened after 1.07 - and insane!Sam is always a plus, in my book.
Run From Themselves by
loneravenRating/Notes/Warnings: PG 13
Recommendation Comment: A very nice take on the "Sam wakes up" theme. It's actually not all that dark. The angst is of a fairly light variety. This is - kind of - the happy ending I would have liked for the show.

On the Edge of a Blade by
lozenger8Rating/Notes/Warning: Brown Cortina (extreme violence), 2100+ words
Recommendation Comment: Great dramatic tension (see the title - it's true!), genuine ambiguity of the characters' motives so that you're reading as fast as you can to find out how it will end and a tone spot-on the darker moments of the series itself. Could have been an episode and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.

Palimpsest by
lozenger8Rating/Notes/Warnings: NC-17 for dark themes and coarse language. 10,500+ words. Spoilers for EVERYTHING.
Recommendation Comment: Aside from the fact it's one of my favourite fics EVER (in this fandom or outside it), it's incredibly well-written, chilling, dark, and cuts to the bone. It also helps set right my dissatisfaction with the canon ending, although I wouldn't necessarily call it "fix-it fic." ;)

Just Sleep, and Sleep by
maestro1123Rating/Notes/Warnings: PG-13 for bad language, themes of an adult nature, mild peril. No spoilers.
Recommendation Comment: It's, again, incredibly bleak and real. It just feels right. It's all about believable extrapolation with me, and Maestro did it completely right here. I can't rec this fic enough.
And What Art by
draegonhawkeRating/Style/Warnings: As many of our video game ratings say, "Rated M for Mature." Darkfic, psychef**k. Crossover with New Who. Spoilers for the end of S3 of New Who. Not sure if you're doing that as a separate thing or not, so here you are. :)

The Maker by
rainer76Rating/Notes/Warnings: Rated M, for language and violence. All parts at writer's journal.
Recommendation Comment: It is dark and twisted and perfect in so, so many ways. The author effortlessly weaves together sections in 2007, 1980, and 1973; there are so many little bits of revelation where you go, "Of course! That's it exactly! Why didn't I see it before?!" As someone who doesn't go for slash, I love to see a fic that sketches out such a complex and interesting relationship between Sam and Gene, and without neglecting the rest of the gang, or a great plot. Absolutely brilliant.
