“What the bloody hell are you doing?” Gene has just woken up, and raises himself on one elbow to peer at Sam puttering in the kitchen.

Sam turns and smiles at him. “Making us some lunch. Thought you might like some.” Sundays were the best day, Sam thought. He gets Gene all to himself - no untimely interruptions from CID, no idiots dragging the Guv off to the pub, no racing round Manchester in the passenger seat of a Ford Cortina - just a gentle, languid day. Course, this generally happens after a long night drinking, and ending up with the pair of them back at his flat, shagging like rabbits for half the night. But Sundays are contentment. Lazy mornings, waking up slowly, kissing... Sam reckons he could die a happy man on a Sunday.

He turns the hob down, leaves lunch simmering, and wanders over to Gene, who is lying on the bed, just watching Sam, still half asleep. Sam sits on the bed, with his back to the wall, while Gene puts his head in Sam’s lap. Sam just stays there, enjoying the peace and quiet, running his fingers through Gene’s hair. Gene is content just to lie there, almost purring with the attention. Truth be told, he enjoys Sundays as much as Sam does. A pleasure he never thought he would know, but found it in the most unlikely of places. The DI from Hyde who crashed into his life, and brought with him so many different ways of thinking - including, it seems, a taste for smart-arsed male coppers. Gene chuckled gently.

“What?” Sam asked.

“Nothin’.”

“You don’t just laugh over nothing.”

“Just - thinking.”

“God help us all...”

They fall back into companionable silence, just enjoying the moment. “So what’s for lunch?”

“Chicken soup” Sam states, proudly. He spent all morning making it from scratch.

“Chicken soup?”

“Good for the soul” he replied, smiling.
