Sam's first night at Gene's house, crammed in a chair, wrapped in a tatty old blanket that smells of motor oil, is the best night of sleep he's had in years.

He wakes in the morning to Gene puttering about in the kitchen and it's as if he's seeing the world for the first time. The fresh light, the whiff of cigarette smoke, and mostly the glorious glow of well being that seems to permeate every inch of his body makes him grin with surprised joy.

“Good morning,” Gene mutters as he hands over a mug of tea. “Sleep well?”
