Apart from the war years, when it became a woman's duty to put an immaculate face on hardship, their mother had never used make-up.

For Heather, therefore, the Beauvoir suitcase always felt vaguely contraband. After the first day she had locked the bedroom door and let her sister examine the contents. Ruth had come from tea with Vic; Heather had been half-anticipating a slew of gossip, but instead she was quiet almost to reverence. Her fingers marched staccato over the upturned brushes, sounding them out.

"Show me?"

Heather took up a jar of rouge, and got to work.

Ooo! What a nice surprise! Everything is so perfectly aligned, I love it so much.

Thank you. It saddens me a bit that we never got to see Heather and Ruth interact, in either timeline. Heather's fierce protectiveness towards both Denise and little Sammy suggests that she'd have been a strong influence on how Ruth coped with all that life threw at her.

I rewatched 2x04 recently and I was seriously lamenting the lack of sisterly interaction! And even just getting to see a teensy bit of her in the future? That would have been so lovely.
