Farewell to David Bowie

Today is a sad day to be a fan of 70s pop. David Bowie has died of cancer aged 69.

I was staying in York with friends, nearly ten years ago, between the two seasons of Life on Mars, which we all loved. We'd been out for dinner, and were in a taxi returning to our hotel, chatting. And then the car radio began to play the song Life on Mars, and we fell silent. The song lasted exactly long enough to accompany the rest of our journey; I think if we'd got back any sooner, we'd have asked the driver to wait until it finished. Those few minutes were perfect.
