The mere thought of Annie having the nerve to steal Gene's Garibaldis just goes to show how brave she actually is, and I think Gene ends up being a bit impressed in spite of himself. I might flip out if someone took my Garibaldis, too, those delicious biscuits (my faves) are super rare around these parts!

As is usual with your writing, the dialogue really shines and is so true to the characters from Gene's grousing to Sam's righteous indignation concerning his pudding. I can easily imagine Annie concealing her troubles in such a way, wanting to appear strong and not be viewed as the weak link in CID. Got to give Gene credit, because he seems to recognize in the end that she may just be stronger than the rest.

Also, the line about getting "all emotional over hoops on toast" was perfect.
