I'm going to apologize in advance for how little I remember! I'm really in the mood for some stories where Gene interacts with Sam at a younger point in Sam's life. I was trying to re-read some and cannot seem to find one particular story

I'm wondering if it might be Our Sammy by mikes_grrl? It's not told from the missus's point of view, but she features in it prominently, and it generally sounds rather similar.

I don't have too many other examples of this type of story (a lot of them are post-coach-accident Sammy, late-adolescent Sam, etc.). Here's what I do have memmed that falls squarely into the young-Sammy-before-the-coach-accident category:
