many times he’s had to take refuge behind the morning paper as Sam gives his latest update on this case or that and Gene had, so help him, even peeped through half-lidded eyes as he pretended to listen
This bit caught me and I absolutely SAW Gene sitting behind his desk, flicking the page of the paper to look at Sam and then look away. You KNOW I love where this is going, and thank god there's another chapter, but I KNOW it's going to end too soon!!

I missed commenting on this before; love the combination of Gene's terror and lust as he contemplates his two coworkers.
