Recs fest 2011: Characters of colour in Life on Mars

Welcome to the Characters of Colour recs! These are fics that have a person of colour at the heart of the story, rather than in a secondary or tertiary role (e.g. Nelson plays matchmaker between Sam and Gene).

Great Life by margo_kim
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Blue Cortina
Why I recommend this fic: A brilliant character study of Eve Olawi that looks at her life before and after meeting Tony Crane. You can hear Eve's sardonic wit and underlying vulnerability in every line, and this tale of how she was charmed into Crane's web is heart-rendingly convincing.

The Show by halotolerant
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Blue Cortina
Why I recommend this fic: When DC Glen Fletcher first walked into CID, Ray immediately hit him with a hailstorm of cruelly racist gibes. Nasty stuff even for Ray... or was it? Halotolerant reveals the truth behind the appearance. And the ending... is breathtaking.

It's Not All Black And White by elfbert
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Blue Cortina, some violence
Why I recommend this fic: Another fic featuring Ray and Glen that, although unrelated to Halo's fic, could almost be a sequel to "The Show". Scenario: when everyone's certain that you hate your black colleague, you're the obvious suspect when he's found beaten into a coma. (Even when he's actually your lover
