Recs Fest 2011: Awesome fanwork that's not Sam/Gene

Nov 02, 2011 11:57

I love the slash at least as much as the next fan, but sometimes I want a different kind of story. What's your favorite fanwork in Life on Mars that's not Sam/Gene? Any other pairing or grouping is welcome, or maybe your favorite is gen, or that elusive beast, f/f. Whatever it is, tell us about it!

Fic: How to Listen by ninamazing
Title: How to Listen
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Sam/Annie
Spoilers through to 2.08
Why I recommend this piece: Blimey, where to start? Okay, first off; the characterisation of the whole relationship is absolutely top-notch. There's the gentle intimacy, the hesitancy, the slow move towards contentment. The dialogue between them is full of things unsaid, but also of things understood, as their lives come to fit together. Sam's doubts and fears are touched on with perfect relevance to his new, post-2.08 life.
And the bit-players in the story are also drawn with loving attention to detail.
This is one that I come back to, as often as I can.

Palimpsest by lozenger8
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Brown Cortina. Dark, dark. Deals with suicide. Gen, with a side of Sam/Annie
Why I recommend this piece:
This may well be my favourite fic I've ever read in this fandom. (And it's not the first time I've recced it, and I daresay it won't be the last, but it's been a while!) Anyone who's ever read anything Loz has written will take it as read that the characterisation is pitch perfect, the dialogue is snappy and the use of language is masterful. This story hooks itself onto canon, actually twisting scenes from the programme into the narrative but with a disturbingly different perspective. The journey she takes Sam on is nothing short of cruel at times, but it makes complete sense. By the end I was reeling from the sheer hopelessness of Sam's position. A warped, wonderful, Groundhog Day style masterpiece.

I completely agree. If I had to pick one LOM fic to take with me to a desert island, this would be it, hands down <333

What Sort of Day Has It Been? by irenak
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Blue Cortina
Why I recommend this piece: irenak's Gen/OT3-ish (Sam/Annie/Gene) post-ep for 1.6 has Annie taking Sam, Gene, and a bottle of wine out to celebrate life post-Reg Cole hostage situation. Fantastic, funny dialogue and interesting Annie analysis of Sam and Gene.

And for another awesome Annie and Team Litton vs. Team Gene in a prank war, check out:

Infinite Jest by chamekke
Rating/Notes/Warnings: Green Cortina
Why I recommend this piece: It's absolutely hilarious and an interesting exploration of team dynamics. And Litton.

OMG. The first one is so... I love it. It's beautiful to me that there are still so many gems in this fandom that I haven't read yet.

And I endorse your second one, fully.

More than This by Blanca
Rating/Notes/Warnings: G, Sam/Annie
Why I recommend this piece: This vid is the perfect example of why I am a Sam/Annie shipper. There is caring, tenderness, hotness, and a real sense of connection. It uses fantastic clips and it is masterfully edited. Plus, the song choice is aces. Double plus, it features so many breathtaking smiles from both Annie and Sam.

Come Whisper in My Ear by margo_kim
Rating/Notes/Warnings: R, Sam/Annie.
Why I recommend this piece: This fic is flaily and adorable. FLAILY AND ADORABLE. I could quote entire paragraphs, but really all I want to do is say 'read. Read now.'

Say Cheese by fern_tree
Rating/Notes/Warnings: G, Gene & Stu
Why I recommend this piece: I admit it, ever since we found out about Stu I have found him utterly fascinating. Usually in a tragic kind of way. This picture helps me forget the pain I usually associate with him, before making me think of it again tenfold. It is bittersweet at its finest. It's as brilliant as all of Fern's work: really bloody brilliant -- not just ( ... )
