Uploading your fic to Archive Of Our Own (a PSA)

Have you heard about Archive Of Our Own (also known as AO3)?

It's a fan-created, fan-run, non-profit, non-commercial archive for fanfiction and fanart. The section devoted to Life on Mars (UK) currently contains 421 423 works, and there's plenty of room for more. Writers whose work you'll find there include dorcas_gustine, lozenger8, ( Read more... )

Thank you for this information, cham! I have been curious about AO3 and dreamwidth, but I've kinda felt like they were both secret clubs in a sense - that you had to be in the know to know... or whatever.

I really appreciate this! I like the ebook feature - nice! And can you import art?

That's what the homepage says - and why it speaks of "fanworks" rather than just fanfic!

I haven't seen any LOM-UK fanart on the site yet, so it's time to remedy that lack.

As far as I can tell from poking around, you'd share your art the way you do it on LJ: in the context of a post, with headers and tags and so forth, and an imgsrc hyperlink to the location of your image file.

P.S. I have unused invite codes for Dreamwidth, so if you (or anyone else reading this) would like one, just let me know.

Do not think I've missed your ploy here, missy. *g*

*bats eyelashes guilelessly* Hey, I said I've downloaded over a hundred. I'm nothing if not transparent, me.

And now I'll have to ask everyone with an account to help me prepare some invitations for those who are interested! (I forgot about that bit - had to edit the original posting - oh dear.)

I don't have an invitations right now and I think Ao3 is a bit slow on the sign-up list too due to how many invites they gave out while hosting Yuletide.

I've requested a batch. *crosses fingers*

*guiltily* Didn't occur to me that this part of the process might be sluggish. Well, I'll beat the bushes a bit and see what I can do.

Note to self: Must load up my fic on to AO3 - I got my invite months ago.

Once a fic is uploaded, readers can download a copy as an ebook in any of the following formats: MOBI, EPUB, PDF, and HTML.

Now that's a function I'd love at the Den. *sigh*

*nods* It's a terrific feature, and still spanking new - only added in September 2010 IIRC. I'm still amazed and pleased at it.

*looks at andy's icon* Would you like to post something about the Collators' Den to the comm at some point, perhaps? I've always been a bit shy to post there (I was invited to AO3) and some of the newer members may not even know about it. It would be good to share the love ♥

What with the Chrome and Gunmetal Madhouse going with .prc as download potential and all the Pros Big Bang 2010 fic available as ebooks, I'm going to have fun with my Kindle!

(Though I'd love to find out how to load non-Amazon purchase works onto my phone, which has the Kindle App...)

Yeah, it would be nice to get some interest in The Den again. We've rather slowed down in terms of fic being uploaded. (And I'm way behind, I've still got about 20 fic to load up!) I'll have a think with my co-mods.

I've been oddly resistant to the idea of AO3 for some time, but now that I'm an e-reader user, the idea of being able to transcribe fic into e-book formats is wildly compelling. Not to mention that if the import from LJ feature is a good'un, it would save me the headache I had imagined would develop if I had to fiddle with all those poorly-labelled Word documents to get at the original source material. *headdesk*

So hey, sounds like a fab idea... except for the invite code thing, of course. :(

If you shoot me your e-mail via PM, I will see about getting you an invitation. I've requested several to give out, but if that request gets snarled in traffic, I know some current members I can approach. *winks meaningfully*

And yes, the import feature for the text itself is surprisingly smooth. It's necessary to do some fiddling each time with the metadata-related fields (the summary, tags and so forth), though. Still, I found it well worth the effort.

No worries, I did a bit of shameless begging on my own LJ and one of my mates came through shockingly quick - already got my account set up, so let the long slog of uploading fic begin! Later, though, damn it.

I am an AO3 member, and all of my LOM fics are already there. (Just a few laggers in other fandoms that haven't got put up yet) I found uploading the stories to be a fairly painless process, and it seems like the kind of archive that will last a while. I do find it a somewhat difficult place to find fic, sorting is limited and it always runs sluggish on my machine, so I don't do any of my reading there except by links from LJ or DW rec sources. Hopefully that part of the project will gradually improve as they work on it.

As for Dreamwidth, I am very happy there, and have several codes if anyone wants them.

I've got 9 of your fics on my Kindle right now. They're wonderful ♥

I do wish Kindle had a way of letting you know if someone downloaded one of your fics as an ebook. That would be even more meaningful than a "kudos" note :-)

Nine! Really? I am just in shock right now, there are only about five of them I consider readable myself. I wish you the best of enjoyment out of them. I will over here, gobsmacked, but smiling.
