Life on Mars @ FanLore

The OTW project FanLore actually DOES have a page for Life on Mars. It is short but is a good basic start for a wiki page on the LoM fandom, but it IS just a start ( Read more... )

I guess I had been under the impression that a person had to be invited by the webmasters in order to have anything to do with OTW. That's not true?

Well you might be confusing FanLore with Archive of Our Own, which is still in closed beta and is still "invitation only" (although I found an invitation surprisingly easy to secure). FanLore is in open beta and anyone can go create a login and edit pages.

*pops up from lurker-ville*

Of course not! The OTW is always looking for volunteers, but Fanlore, due to its slow start, especially. Registering on Fanlore is completely free and open to the public.

If you want to volunteer for the OTW as a whole (we've got things that need doing in basically every committee), totally contact Volunteers :).

I plan on ... making some significant changes

Not that I suppose it's any of my business, but I would request that you don't reduce the main page to "a very basic overview". My personal opinion is that doing that would reduce UK Life on Mars to just "a version", whereas it is of course The Original, The Real Thing, and everything else is "a version" of it.

I have no idea what "fish or cut bait" means, but I will try to find time to put something together on the Spanish version, and I will link your post at the La Chica de Ayer communities.

I'm just logging off for the morning, but I'll read the OTW stuff properly later for the rules etc.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

ETA: I can see why you want to change it - it's like it was written by someone who's not actually part of the fandom. "some grumbling that Gene is too old"? WTF? I've been here 2.5 years now and I've never heard that! On the up side, there are comms there I've never heard of, so a little investigation may be in order later on.

Well I would say it IS your business, being involved in the LoM fandom as you are. :)

Yeah, the "Gene is too old" comment really grabbed me as well, because WTF? That is clearly one hot fan war I missed out on. *rolls eyes* I was also surprised by the absence of the TRA, as that I think preceded the LJ comm, didn't it?

I'm rather married to the idea of making a main "LoM" page with subpages; while I understand your argument, I don't think being "The Original" makes it de facto the Real Thing. Each version is The Real Thing, whether we like that version or not.

The wiki is supposed to be akin to an encyclopedia and it makes more sense to have a general page break down into more specific articles, as opposed to a specific article that references side articles. That said, I think it will be possible on the 'main" page to state clearly that the UK version was the original, and the inspiration for the US and Spanish shows.

I'm not sure if TRA really predates the LJ comm... hmpf September 15 2009, 21:29:47 UTC
when I joined the fandom both were already around. Then again, I joined the fandom in, err, dunno, sometime in the first half of 2006 (Wheeeee! I just unearthed my first-ever LoM LJ entry! http://hmpf.livejournal.com/134350.html - It's from April 1st, 2006, and I was just two eps into the show then.) - so I don't really know about the very beginnings of the fandom.

If TRA predates the comm it doesn't predate it by much, I think.

Also, I'd say that every remake of the show should be treated as its own show. Because that's essentially what they are.

I should perhaps add that TRA definitely is where most of the action was, in the early days. The LJ community seemed slow and small in comparison, which is why I moved most of my own activity to TRA, back then.

*nods*

I'd be happy to join in, I just need to remember to do so, it's the sort of thing I am always fascinated reading but never remember to actually contribute to. So as you say time to roll up the sleeves and get going.

Now I just need to remember to do it.
