This is excellent. You've carved out a beautiful story here and I adored Gene, bringing wine even if it was pink. Interesting thought though that 'real men' didn't drink wine in the 70s. Such wonderful changes. Your dialogue was so good, sounded so in character and really, the unspoken is so often what men seem to be like. Beautiful and then scary as hell at the end. TCG makes me shiver!
I love this. I'm only just dipping into LOM fic, but so far I've read quite a few fics that got Sam and Gene's voices and characters right - but this does that AND feels true to the show and its mood as well.
This is delightful, and sentimental, with just that edge of weirdness and creepy that defined the show. Is this Sam shutting down and dying? Is this him letting go of the past and moving forward? Is this just a mad man falling in love? Maybe all of the above.
I loved use of wine to bring them to that sleepy, relaxed understanding which neither was fighting off too much (nice change of pace, there!) and of course, the banter, to wit: You know, Gene, I never fail to be astounded by your unerring sophistication... Totally snarky!Sam.
And this, I think, captures almost everything there is to be said about Gene: It was Gene that didn’t fit the comfortable pattern.
