Asking for ff.net passwords.

Sorry if this is old meme but a skim of the last couple days doesn't reveal anything about it. I figure a lot of people in this comm might be afraid to register a FanLib account like I am, LOL.

But I just found out something interesting from someone who did register an account (link to my journal ( Read more... )

Interesting. I knew FanLib was encouraging members to import fic from fanfiction.net, but I didn't know they had semi-automated the process. Makes sense. Entering stories through FanLib's interface is painful. If it wasn't automated, a lot of people wouldn't do it.

All blogs, including livejournal, have code that makes it possible to export content [without it, we wouldn't be able to read our flist]. But automating a livejournal==>FanLib export would not be simple. FanLib is set up for *.doc or *.txt files, not html. Stories formatted for livejournal look like hell at FanLib, and require a lot of manual clean up. Not sure what would happen to stories formatted using RTF. Nothing good, we can assume.

I'm making the assumption that FanLib cares about formatting, which could be a false one.

But automating a livejournal==>FanLib export would not be simple.

Largely because there are no fields for stuff like "character," "rating," etc. and authors just mark up headers however they like. Also, there might be posts like LOLZ I FALED AGLEBRA mixed in with fics.

But even in the hypothetical case that such limitations did not exist, should people be providing them with their passwords?

Holy batshit! The page at FanLib that asks for your fanfiction.net password? It isn't even https:// ! Totally unsecure! In fact, all of their profile info is!

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE AND WHAT ARE THEY DOING ON THE INTERNET?

This reminds me. I know a number of people have created accounts at FanLib to safeguard their pen names, cybersquatting in other words. It would be wise to use a unique password at FanLib, not the same one you use at fanfiction.net, livejournal, or anywhere else.

It would be wise to use a unique password at FanLib, not the same one you use at fanfiction.net, livejournal, or anywhere else.

That should be basic internet security. You should never use the same password for another site, even if it isn't for something vital like a bank account or credit account.

And the second cardinal rule is that you never give out your password to a third party, for any reason.

I suppose this counts as the 21st century version of having street smarts.
