Henry Jenkins has recently posted 5 parts of an 8-part article called If It Doesn't Spread It's Dead on his blog. In his words, it is a white paper which was developed last year by the Convergence Culture Consortium on the topic of Spreadable media. Part Four has a small discussion about FanLib.

Interesting. I think the authors are right that FanLib members who did not feel close ties to other areas of fandom, and who did not feel part of the gift economy, were one reason FanLib failed to thrive. The members would be unlikely to "spread" and help the site grow. They were motivated and/or rewarded by prizes they could win individually; new members were therefore competition.
