FanLib Fandom Fakery

Sep 10, 2007 19:20

Fandoms at FanLib are listed in order of "popularity," meaning fandoms represented by the most fanfiction appear first.

Browsing the fandoms this morning, I noticed something very interesting has happened.

As recently as July, only the first and second pages of fandoms (between 75 and 150 fandoms) had stories. There were about two thousand ( Read more... )

I went and checked my account and it was fine. Apparently whoever's using other people's accounts to add reviews [cough] is only using accounts which have already reviewed some stories, which I haven't. Too obvious, maybe, if your review count goes from zero to something? Easier to bury the fakes in a crowd of legitimate reviews.

Still, good grief. [sigh]

I have no reviews, either.

I have to remove my account there. Yuck!

They didn't add reviews, just ratings--the little stars.

Ahh. Well, I've never done any of those, either. It's pretty pathetic either way, no matter who's adding them. :P

I'm mildly temted to create an account to raise the issue on the forums...after all, mis-categorisation of fic is really annoying for people wanting to read in obscue fandoms.

Yes, very. When I first saw the new stories, I thought, wow, there is really an Army of Darkness fic? But it turned out to be a crossover with Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th AND it's written like a script. The author didn't bother to re-write it as a narrative before posting.

*bashes things*

Oh crap! There is an author note: I posted this on FanFiction.net three years ago but got very little response. I want to put the treatment up here to hopefully get more input on whether or not I should write it up as a full prose story or even finish the script 2/3's of which I've already written.

Treatment? That is deeply, deeply depressing on so many levels.

Oh, ROFL! I just replied to a comment to my comment here and when I went back to the Gmail page I noticed that the ad at the top was for The Newest Colon Cleanse. [giggling facepalm] I think FanLib could use that -- that's probably blue dude's problem, given the expression on his face. :D
