FanLib Blunders Into The News

May 29, 2007 01:11

Thanks to google news alerts:

Instead of creating the Myspace of fanfic since the launch two weeks ago, FanLib.com sparked a white-hot Internet firestorm.

Be sure to click the link for more at the bottom. VERY interesting stuff there:

"KEM-owned Entertainment Marketing Partners' heavy-weight Mark Stroman was hired to help Singer and Williams ( Read more... )

Wow. Thank god. FanLib is about to become an object lesson for the industry.

Setting aside FanLib itself ... it's as if FanLib, while they did not do any research, has through the school of hard knocks instigated a quickie education in fandom.

And wow, Mary McNamara really did her homework. This is the sort of article you can pass along to anyone to help them understand this "Fandom" phenomenon.

She really did! I've been trying to leave a comment, but I can't. Perhaps I'll have to use the Internet Explorer of Evil.

I haven't tried to comment, but I'm spreading this article around like a drunk who just won the lottery. Everyone's getting a copy, on the house.

So... they're targeting women in order to get to the coveted dude demographic? If true: I have not even begun to get angry. SERIOUSLY.

And wow! Way to go with the coverage!

I have sought news coverage for the last two weeks. I had nothing to do with this article, but I couldn't like it more even if I had written it. :D

The article exposes more FanLib lies.

Chris Williams said at Henry Jenkins' blog:

"Our market research showed that the site mission has great potential in a surprisingly broad demographic range. So the site design was not principally driven by a specific demographic, it was much broader than that and was designed for those people who like to use the new online tools and services."

Now we know their pitch to industry promised they could reach young males. The pink dude/blue guy ad wasn't something they used just because it was in "general rotation." They were targeting a particular demographic, as many of us suspected.

I noticed that part of the article too. By targeting the young male demographic it shows that FanLib did not do any research about fans before they went public with the site. If they did do research about online fan communities than they lied to Madison Avenue about the demographic they could reach.

I have to admit I did a little happy dance when I saw the icons. I wasn't expecting them to be posted with the story.

Mary McNamara is my hero. What an enlightened and well-informed post. She must have done her homework *cough* unlike FanLib *cough*. She'd been to cons, read fan fiction, navigated LJ, used and credited icons correctly all while writing a news story. I'll be surprised if she isn't still involved in fandom somehow. Either way this is one of best researched articles on an internet trend I've seen yet.

And she posted my icons! I'm honored.

I wrote a long thank you post here.
