I completely feel for you - I've had similar things happen. In one instance, it was someone translating my work into another language and posting it on another site without my permission, but for the most part, it has been authors posting work that uses very similar concepts to a piece of mine. And it's not basic ideas, like "House buys a new motorcycle," it's original takes on emotions and introspection and unique scenarios...and it's always posted within weeks of mine, by someone who has commented on my work repeatedly, making the chances of it being a coincidence between slim and none. It's happened with two different people now, in two different fandoms, and it makes me want to set their hair on fire. A lot of stuff drives me nuts in the fanfic world, but this sort of plagiarism that just barely hides behind the line of outright theft really takes the cake. Well, that and anything in which gratuitous violence is wielded as a plot device with about as much restraint and delicacy as a wrecking ball. Those are about even ( ... )

Yeah, I've had the translation thing happen to me. The thing was, the translator was also changing the content of my chapters, so I became pretty pissed, LOL. I'm always surprised by people's intent on plagiarizing fanfiction. Like... really? Really? I just don't get it.

Who's the person you're thinking about?

Eh, I'd rather not say, just because I never know who's reading what or lurking where and I'm pretty anti-shitstorm right now. I got involved with another debacle like this involving someone I beta'd for whose work was ripped off and that was a headache in and of itself. I think at this point I'm not in danger of seeing anyone else do that to me, because frankly, I don't read lousy fic, and the people who write lousy fic are the people who tend to plagiarize. If it's happening, I'd rather not know, since that would mean dredging through pages upon pages of slop that'd make my eyes bleed.

I completly understand why you're angry and i HATE that happened to you :(((
I miss GOS so much, i was wondering when you'll update :(

But please don't erase everything you wrote, it was YOUR idea !! I wish you would continue with this idea and the person who stole it admit it and apologize to you.

People steal my videos or clips from it all the times, it sucks so much, people have no respect.
Be careful with twitter people.

I'm sorry people steal your clips/videos. :(

Right now, I'm not sure what to do. I would be inviting comparisons if I posted the chapter as it is. It's not really something I could just change a few aspects in, because that's not really how I write. But I definitely don't want to re-write 30 pages, because doing that would mean no updates until November... at the earliest. And I'm already behind.

yeah no way for november update !!!
I don't read a lot of fics to make comparisons but i'm sure people would recognised your style and the ones who follow you on twitter knows the story and that it was your idea etc.

Good luck with that dear, and if people steal your ideas it means you're that good ;)

I'm so sorry this happened. :( *hugs* Plagiarism is not cool.

I'm working on a novel right now (not fic; completely original characters), and even to my very best friends I'm not telling them what it's even about. It's not a ~super original idea~ or anything like that, but once I get talking about it, I'll want to tell them everything and I don't want someone to steal any of the ideas I've written out. I don't think they would, but they might go to another friend and say "omg so my friend is writing this novel and..." So I'm just waiting until I finish it, edit it, and THEN I'll tell them what I can without spoiling it and then let them read it. I've written close to 200 pages already (from June to now) and I'm not about to have someone steal any of that shit. I've put a lot of hours and weeks and months into this, even though 200 pages doesn't sound like a whole lot.

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. I'm extra cautious with things I think I could eventually make money from by just not talking about it at all and WGA registering it the second I feel comfortable doing that. There are at least protections there.

With fanfic, it's all basically on honor. FF.net never deletes anything, lol. And if you see that someone has stolen from you, a lot of people are probably going to respond with "Well, it's just fanfic, NBD." It pisses me off so much. My work shouldn't be made to suffer because of a lazy asshole.

what. the. fuck. that's total bullshit and that person is a fucking fuck. screw being nice, i call people on it because it's not JUST writers who can spot when something has been plagiarized, we readers can too. people are fucking ridiculous; i've seen 'authors' steal stuff from really old stories on sites and claim them as new stories. i've seen them take them from one site to another as their own. well to those retards, here are a couple of newsflashes: one you're an asshole. two, if you've read what you're stealing and posting it on a site where other people are reading that same stuff odds are someone is going to notice. which means three, you're an idiot. four, it's indefensible.

finally, i'm sad to hear that something like this has happened to you. i certainly enjoy your work in the house fandom and i hope this doesn't deter you from continuing to share your completed work.

Thanks for the support. :) That sounded sarcastic in my head, but I mean that. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks said person is an asshole.

This explains so much, tweet-wise.

Well that just sucks big time. I've had the same thing happen to me, although my story was already up and it was done by a random stranger (familiar via fandom, but not someone I ever spoke to). And I did want to commit serious acts of violence. The "best" feeling I had about it was to tell the heifer to take my stuff down, but I also had friends talking me off cliffs. I think in the end I didn't do anything, but I was so pissed at the time. Sure it's "just" fanfic, but those were my ideas, my long hours, my creativity you stole. The least you could have done was put a different spin on it.

Exactly. I didn't commit an act of violence, but I did cuss her out. In the end, it just made me even more irritated. Sorry someone stole your work. :(
