The Write Place: Prestidigitation

Presto

“What’s it like?” Murphy asked, her head propped in her hand, elbow braced on a pillow. Lying in bed next to her Harry looked over with a smile, his arms folded behind his head. He looked contented, relaxed and just a little smug. She probably looked just the same.

“What’s what like?” He asked, reaching out with a hand to tug one of her curls. He even sounded just a bit smug and drowsy. That made Murphy smug. She’d worn him out. Again. It was certainly an ego boost wearing out a wizard. Okay, she was a little tired too, but it was a happy, sleepy feeling. One she could spend all night wallowing in.

“Magic. What’s it like?” she inched closer to him, allowing him to slide an arm around her. She shifted and draped herself over him like a blanket.

“You want me to show you?” He asked, still playing with the ends of her hair.

“Ha ha, yes, you’re good in bed and we can give it another go later, but that’s not what I’m talking about.” She rolled her eyes and poked him in the chest.

He chuckled and grabbed her hand. “I wasn’t talking about sex. You’ve got a dirty mind, Murphy.”

She gave him a droll look, but he just grinned boyishly back. He was using his adorable charm against her. She really had to get better about falling for that. He was going to get cocky about that. A shame he really was just that adorable and she was just that weak when it came down to it. She didn’t relent this time and kept her answering smile internal.

“Okay, okay, here.” He sat up and tugged her into his lap.

“What are you doing?” She asked, putting her hand out to keep herself balanced as he scooted back against the headboard, pulling her with him.

“I’m going to show you what magic’s like.” He said, settling in. He rested his chin on her shoulder and ran his hands down her arms. “Magic is hard to describe. I could try to put it in words, but that wouldn’t do it justice.”

Harry’s palms started to glow with a soft golden light that slowly seemed to sink into her own skin. It caused her muscles to loosen and relax, warmth flowing from his hands and the light into her. She could even feel it in her bones and it was spreading up her arms to the rest of her body. It felt like coming home after a long vacation or a summer afternoon nap. It was like a small jolt, a shot of espresso or a shot of whiskey that spurred her system into action.

Harry moved his hands down to hers, lacing their fingers together. He turned her hands palms up as the light from his spread throughout hers and then rose above hers in a little glowing ball. She stared at it in wonder and joy.

“Just like that,” Harry whispered. “It feels just like that.”
