Oh, you captured so much about James and Lily in this little snippet. Her frustration and nervousness, his snarky-ness yet absolutely and complete devotion to Lily. So much of their personalities and relationship comes through. And having baked a few not-so-great cakes in my time, I can relate. =/

I love her frustration that she KNOWS it's not right, but can't figure out what went wrong.

Aww. Lils, being a good mother does not hinge on being able to give your kid a homemade birthday cake. Your Muggleborn, get a box mix!

And James, as always, is adorable. he's always such a steady figure for everyone he loves in your fic even when he's freaking out to. I love the way you write him as the steady one and let Lily be more emotional than a lot of people portray her.
