On a less directly depressing note, I find it amusing that nearly all cultures of the world and in history, many entirely on their own, found some way of producing alcohol.  Vodka from potatoes, rum as a part of sugar production, whiskey from rye, sake from rice, wine from grapes, beer from barley ( Read more... )

There was a need -- a need for a drink cleaner than water. The problem was that water wasn't always as clean as it is now, so people got all sorts of diseases from it. Not the case with alcohol. So those who could hold their liquor survived, and those who couldn't hold their liquor didn't.

I even had Shu remark about this in Memento Eden.

Haha history dorks so predictable I was gonna reply with the same comment as Chris.

The physiological effects are just a side effect of what it was really for, which was killing bacteria!
