I didn't attend any of the programs you're applying for, but I think I spent on average 10 hours per class per week. Online classes were almost always more work, because there was a participation element, usually participating formally in discussion forums, that was more time-intensive than sitting in a classroom and chiming in every once in a while (I did some online and some in-person at UW-Madison).
I took two classes per semester and worked 40 hours a week with no problems. It varied by week & semester but I think I spent about 10-12 hours a week. The first semester was the hardest because I was getting used to school again & taking Human Information Behavior, which I found to be the most challenging. Since you are in central NJ, are you considering Rutgers?
I have decided against Rutgers for a number of reasons, one of which is that since I am an international student, I am not eligible for in-state tuition, and in this case it's not much cheaper than other options. Rutgers also has the least flexible admission criteria of all the schools I considered (i.e. requires GRE, foreign credentials have to be evaluated by WES only which is a pain, etc.) And, I don't really get the idea of putting library/information people together with communications people rather than in an iSchool. I went to their open house and these two programs (and people that go to either) are so much different.
It really varies. I work full-time but have some downtime at work during which I can get some reading and writing done. I'd say I do that probably about 1 hour per day. I'm usually too fried at the end of the day to do much schoolwork in the evenings, so I do most on the weekends - probably about 8-10 hours per weekend. I'm in a hybrid program and the online classes are a lot more work then those with a face-to-face component, for sure.
I will add that I tend to do quite a bit of supplemental reading "outside" the course materials to round out my understanding of topics. I'm not sure how common or essential this is.
i'm at syracuse ... henareNovember 7 2013, 02:14:59 UTC
the advice others give here is good ... you're aware that UIUC requires an on-campus component every semester (a few days), right? i applied to the same list of schools that you are considering ... except drexel.
Yes, I know that. This is not necessarily a bad thing.
Do you mind telling me, did you get accepted to all of them? or just syracuse? You are doing the online program, right? how do you like it? I've just learned about their open house, too bad I have a GRE scheduled for the same morning.
