The tag line on my e-mail since I started this new job (Janyary 6, 2007!) has been a quote from Victor Hugo:

"A library is an act of faith."

I love that line.  It sets the context for why I do what I do here.  I'm not about "the business case."  I'm not about efficiency.  I'm about the value of commitment... commitment to an idea.  The idea that the ( Read more... )

Thanks... and I am enjoying the opportunity to read about your vocation as well. In some ways, I think our vocations are very similar. We both have congregations (you of worshipers, me of researchers); we both have a doctrine (you the liturgy, me the classification system!); we both have tradition (you the sacrements, me the act of learning); we both face evolution (you of worship, and me of interacting with information).

I also think we both face extinction... a reality that keeps us both sharp and committed to rediscovery of our art every day. Religion today is at risk and that risk inspires the clergy to rediscover it. So with libraries... the Internet suggests they are obsolete yet when you step into a library, you can rediscover the joys of learning all over again.
