Natalia sat in the corner, drink in hand, watching the people around her couple-up in time for the big New Year countdown. Coming to the party had seemed like a good idea at the time. Now though, she wished she was anywhere but there.
Eric was on the other side of the room chatting up two girls; Ryan had disappeared; Horatio had turned up with Yelina; and Calleigh... Calleigh had arrived with Jake. It was at that point Natalia had taken up her current position in the corner.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't stop herself from glancing over at the blonde and her companion. She'd thought that the two of them were no longer seeing each other. She'd thought that Calleigh had moved on. She'd thought... well, it didn't matter now, as she had obviously thought wrong.
As the time neared midnight, Natalia felt as though the room was closing in on her. There were only so many looks and touches she could take. She needed to get outside. At least there she would be spared the ache of seeing and remaining hope shattered into pieces as the clock struck twelve.
Rolling her eyes at her own melodramatics, Natalia downed the last of her drink and headed for the balcony. Working against the crowd, she made it out into the tranquility of the night just as the countdown began.
"TEN!"
Natalia looked up at the stars.
"NINE!"
Seeing one shoot across the sky she closed her eyes and made a wish.
"EIGHT!"
A door behind her opened, the noise from the party breaking out into the stillness before once again being tamed behind its glass confines.
"SEVEN!"
Keeping her eyes closed, Natalia inhaled the night air, trying to ignore the presence behind her.
"SIX!"
A subtle hint of apple and vanilla caused her heart-rate to pick up and her grip on the railing to tighten.
"FIVE!"
Warmth spread through her lower back as a hand came to rest there.
"FOUR!"
Turning slowly, Natalia was instantly captured by twinkling green eyes.
"THREE!"
Soft fingers reached up to move a lock of hair from her face, placing it gently behind her ear.
"TWO!"
"Calleigh?" Her whispered question, answered with a smile.
"ONE!"
Lips met for the first time accompanied by the sound of fireworks being set off across the city.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
