"Winning over the rake" is usually pretty fruitless. In the end the spell is over when you realize that generally their mystic is "it". Everything else you thought about them have juts been traits that you've projected anyway. The two that come to mind that we've encountered over the time we've known each other (CK and MS) really in the end had the personality of an old gym sock, didn't they ?

Much more fun and rewarding to befriend the curmudgeon.

That's a pretty astute set of observations. I've never really thought of it that way, but you hit that nail totally on the head. But as far back as--no, even before college, I saw that I was drawn to that type, and for pretty much the exact reasons you spell out so eloquently here.

Wonder what you'd call a female rake. (...a hoe? *wink*)
