The final kick in the ass to join Netflix: They have the entire My So-Called Life series (which as you know is out of print on both DVD and VHS). I am missing the last six episodes and I need to see the series finale again, like, now.
Christ, I'm only a few years younger than the parents at this point, yet they all still seem so relateable...

Actually Jared Leto and my tattoo artist have very similar features. Just made the connection. It''s been bothering me for months who he looks like.

I don't know why you made me think of this but there's a My-So-Called Life episode where Angela screams at Brian, "You analyze everything until it doesn't even exist anymore!" Which of kind of ironic because he's hopelessly in love with her (and doesn't do a very good job concealing it most of the time).

English - my problem with the graduate program is the fact that most of the professors I dealt with placed more emphasis on the social/economic background of the work than, you know, the work itself.

i didn't realize MSCL is out of print. i own it on dvd. i also relate so much! also to freaks and geeks. i remember my mom asking me once why i wanted to watch shows about high school so much (and then i was in my 20s). probably because i never had those experiences in high school. needless to say i never dated anyone in my high school - and certainly not one of the hottest. oh to be pressured into having sex by your hot boyfriend and then having the guts to say NO even though it meant he'd break up with you! angela chase may have been self-absorbed (aren't we all as teenagers - hell even now?) but she was a good role model (i think). she knew when to call for help and she knew when to say no when it wasn't right for her. i envied her. my favorite episode is the hand holding episode that will forever have buffalo tom seared into my head...
i may have to watch it now...

I agree; Angela Chase is a good role model. I think the reason why she's such an enduring character is that you knew she was a good and unique person with depth, but she made mistakes. She could be pretty selfish, insecure, and thoughtless--in some ways that are unique to adolescence, some not. But she is a very remorseful person and you see how she has to live with her regrets and losses. At some point at least, every character does.
Actually, "Self-Esteem" is the one where they read the "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" sonnet in Emglish class, and both Jordan & Brian realize that they both have such strong feelings for Angela BECAUSE she's flawed. And real. It's a great moment.
