The final kick in the ass to join Netflix: They have the entire My So-Called Life series (which as you know is out of print on both DVD and VHS). I am missing the last six episodes and I need to see the series finale again, like, now.
Christ, I'm only a few years younger than the parents at this point, yet they all still seem so relateable... ( Read more... )

Well, Rayanne is a lot like my pal bitchgoddessdm and I know you're a dedicated Missing: fan, so that makes sense... ;)
Actually Jared Leto and my tattoo artist have very similar features. Just made the connection. It''s been bothering me for months who he looks like.

I forgot all about the random raggedy ann costume ! I have a very clear memory of seeing Tayna with him in the hallway at Shaw and just being like "iiiiiiiii seeeeeeeeeeee"

P.S. I DID wind up staying up and watching MSCL. Until 5AM.

I'm reminded of why I stopped pursuing a graduate degree in English (ie, politics, etc.)

It's fun in some ways, and I feel there's a great deal of validity in understanding things on a deeper level and opening up people's minds to see things differently, but there is an abstracted, ivory-tower aspect to that world that I personally couldn't get down with as a career, even if I had not been such an academic abomination. I'd really much rather just expound on this shit on LJ for fun. ;)

I don't know why you made me think of this but there's a My-So-Called Life episode where Angela screams at Brian, "You analyze everything until it doesn't even exist anymore!" Which of kind of ironic because he's hopelessly in love with her (and doesn't do a very good job concealing it most of the time).

I'd like to think I'm more of a Xander Harris or a Wesley Wyndham-Pryce than a Brian Cracow. Hopefully.

English - my problem with the graduate program is the fact that most of the professors I dealt with placed more emphasis on the social/economic background of the work than, you know, the work itself.

that is fucking hilarious. i don't think i knew that (i knew about the sweatshirt, but not the snowboarding comment to NO NEED). ha!

i didn't realize MSCL is out of print. i own it on dvd. i also relate so much! also to freaks and geeks. i remember my mom asking me once why i wanted to watch shows about high school so much (and then i was in my 20s). probably because i never had those experiences in high school. needless to say i never dated anyone in my high school - and certainly not one of the hottest. oh to be pressured into having sex by your hot boyfriend and then having the guts to say NO even though it meant he'd break up with you! angela chase may have been self-absorbed (aren't we all as teenagers - hell even now?) but she was a good role model (i think). she knew when to call for help and she knew when to say no when it wasn't right for her. i envied her. my favorite episode is the hand holding episode that will forever have buffalo tom seared into my head...

i may have to watch it now...

The hand-holding episode, aka "Self-Esteem", is the one I started at 4AM. My faves are the finale (which I haven't seen in a decade) and the school dance one, "Life of Brian" --Freudian typo: I just typed in the word "Brain". Hee.

I agree; Angela Chase is a good role model. I think the reason why she's such an enduring character is that you knew she was a good and unique person with depth, but she made mistakes. She could be pretty selfish, insecure, and thoughtless--in some ways that are unique to adolescence, some not. But she is a very remorseful person and you see how she has to live with her regrets and losses. At some point at least, every character does.

Actually, "Self-Esteem" is the one where they read the "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" sonnet in Emglish class, and both Jordan & Brian realize that they both have such strong feelings for Angela BECAUSE she's flawed. And real. It's a great moment.

P.S. To my knowledge, Matt never had Cal Thomas, but he wouldn't have needed to pull such pranks with any professor who says: "See Batman Returns for its scatological themes. The film is all about shit."

Cal Thomas-- *sigh*

I know I am a few days late, but I'm pretty sure most of the MSCL episodes are on YouTube -- they're split up, as they are too long for one clip (don't ask me why I would know all of this), but still definitely, like, watchable. :)
