To clarify re: new LJ

A few comments seem to think the tauren journal is obsessive or sick, but I'm actually doing it because I want a creative outlet. At work, the day can drag at times when I'm waiting for things to compile ( Read more... )

Meh? Dude, even I didn't think it was obsessive or sick, and I'm. . .not anti-WoW exactly, but passionately not interested in it. We had someone submit a final story written as a blog (I don't know if it was LJ, might have been Xanga) in one of my creative writing classes. I thought it was an awesome idea, although I didn't get to read it because it wasn't supposed to be peer-reviewed. Doing this with a WoW character really isn't that different from people writing game_chronicles entries from the POV of a character (the way Aaron did for Pirate Changeling).

Sort of. Though GCs are something that is supposed to be written anyway (for XP and chronicling the story). Writing it IC is just one way to accomplish that. Not that it wasn't fun to do it that way. I also really shouldn't be talking as I just wrote of my own accord a 4 and a half page journal entry for Dreams of Rebirth.

This is a neat idea. Maybe I'll find it entertaining despite my total lack of knowledge of WoW. Though I still maintain the belief that what role playing occurs in MMORPGs does not remotely approach the actual role playing and characterization that you find in tabletop or Larp, where the role playing is, after all, the whole point. Perhaps I'm just a role playing fascist.

It's like apples and oranges, man. The actual roleplaying in WoW is almost nil, unless you're on a RolePlaying server, where there are rules to enforce staying in character.

But I think you can't really compare WoW RP to tabletop/larp RP, where as you say, the RP is the point. I hope you will find it entertaining, as I'm essentially presenting a personality and character that I rarely utilize while playing in-game, but is always sort of persistent in the back of my mind.

If I were to actually speak and act as Endymion would while playing WoW, I'd probably find it to be counterintuitive to the things I want to do as a player, like hard-grinding reputation, going to certain locations, or you know, keeping friends in the guild (who would be quite turned off by the IC dialogue!).

Hmm. I'm not upset that people thought it was obsessive or sick. I just didn't want something untrue being believed.

Jarrod, my intent wasn't to "defend," but rather to clarify. I hope this makes you less upset, as I didn't feel pressured by any outside source. I completely agree with where you're coming from, though, and I can see the source of the confusion.

Maria, mostly same deal. Your comment seemed to be defensive in tone as well, maybe due in part to Jarrod's comment.

It's all good, people.

Sorry about my earlier post. I meant it as a good-natured joke, but I guess those things don't translate well over the internet always.
