There's No Place Like Crazy

Poor ladyoneill. I'll shut up about Kansas soon, I promise. It's just so nice to have some outrage directed away from my own state, ya know?

First off, recent events have finally spurred me into reading Thomas Frank's What's the Matter With Kansas?, which I've been meaning to dig into for months. I'll be honest, the book is flawed - 40 pages of endnotes ( Read more... )

evolution, kansas, culture warriors, conservative fuckheads, red states

Aw, thanks honey.

I just remind myself that I live in the liberal hotbed of Kansas. I have to remind myself of that a lot.

I have that book--should sit down and read it.

And at least Kansas has always been Republican. MIssouri bothers me even more because until the last few years they've been staunchly Democratic and now they've really been taken over by the religious right (and Ashcroft, thank god he got ill, the fascist pig).

Bob Dole doesn't even bother me anymore. He's old school Republican. God, give me old school Republicans over the fundys any day. I remember how much I bitched about him and some of the other now moderate Republicans. Little did I know that they were the sane ones!

Brownback, on the other hand, is a shithead.

The hearings start back up tomorrow. Dunno why they took a five day weekend, I'm sure on the taxpayer's dime. :P

Which county do you live in again? I'm looking at the results map from 2004 and apparently, there were 2 counties that went Kerry. Whoo! (Small victory.)

It's a good book, just kind of a chore to get thru. I hate sifting thru endnotes... it makes it too much like homework.

Missouri is another example of the populist argument getting twisted & perverted by the Rushes of the world. It's almost heartbreaking how people have fallen for it. *weeps*

I'm not scared of Bob Dole like I used to be. Anyone walking around referring to themselves in the 3rd person can't be too fearsome. "This is Dole Country!" "Bob Dole's not gonna stand for this!" "Bob Dole thought Bob Dole was here to answer some goddamn questions, why are you making Bob Dole sit thru this small talk?" Heheheheh.

Brownback, on the other hand, is a shithead. This guy reminds me a lot of *my* asshole Senator, George Allen. ( ... )

Douglas County--home of Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas. Founded by abolitionists, burned by Quantrill's Raiders, childhood home of Langston Hughes, longtime home and burial place of William S. Burroughs, only town in Kansas where it's illegal to discriminate due to sexual orientation, only town in Kansas where smoking is outlawed in all indoor public places, run by a mayor named Boog, pretty damn cool town. :)

The other county that went blue is Wyandotte which is basically Kansas City, Kansas, the poor Kansas part of greater Kansas City--working class, unionists etc.

Hear hear!

Keep God out of science. Science is about the natural and physical world. It doesn't go into the supernatural or metaphysical. Sometimes, yes, those questions have to be answered in order to do science. This, however, is not one of those times. Let science take us as far as we can go and then use a mythos to get the rest.
