Democratic National Convention Open Thread

Can't say how much I'm gonna watch, but with Senator Kennedy supposed to speak tonight (TEDDY!), it's surely going to be at least background for most of the evening. Anybody up for an open thread?

I'm watching C-Span, will probably mostly stick to them and PBS, but feel free to snark on the blather of the various "personalities", too.

You know, I could really do without the ostentatious religiosity. I get why it's politically necessary; the Republicans have worked so hard to portray Democrats as godless heathens. But I wish religion didn't have such a prominent place in the conversation.

And that's not just because I am a godless heathen. Can't we talk about what's good about this country, and what we desperately need to fix, and the best ways to fix it, without referring to a deity? Occasionally?

I agree with your assertion on the religious overtones but for some members of society they are synonymous with the issues, what's good, how to fix it etc.

I thought Michelle did very well. She was personable and warm in a way her husband could not be and punched those big points of commonality and home values while sharing who she is and how she came to be with Obama.

I do think that she spoke either ahead or behind the teleprompter at given moments but I tend to think she was ahead.

I did think the nod to Hillary was well placed and worded.

Their daughters are lovely. The youngest has no fear of the spotlight at all.

I know. But for other people, religion is rather private... they don't hide their faith, but they think it's a matter of their own conscience (and my own conscience). They mention God in passing, but they don't try to make him their mascot, if that makes sense. Ehn, it's a cultural thing. I get that. But it does make me feel just a little uncomfortable.

She did. And I agree on the Hillary nod. It was seamless and classy.

I do agree with you, I think religion is very personal private choice whether one chooses to share it with others or not. And yes, I get the mascot comment (it brings to mind the Buddy Jesus doll ( ... )

Someone on MSNBC's got a "BRING BACK CRYSTAL PEPSI" sign.

Is it bad I found this funny?! I keep thinking there are worse signs...

Thank you for the Teddy link - excellent, excellent speech. He is so warm.

I found it hilarious. It was just so random. How long has it been since you thought about Crystal Pepsi? Yeah, exactly.

He was. I was worried about how he'd look, how he'd seem -- and he seemed like himself. And happy. And defiant.

Yeah. Like, we know they armed white supremacists are out there, but it's more comfortable (for those of us in no way tasked with stopping them) to pretend otherwise.
