Country Music Politics, and Countdown to Iowa Caucuses

Jan 03, 2008 10:46

I just finished a really good book, Rednecks & Bluenecks: The Politics of Country Music. It actually came out 2 years ago, but I never got around to reading it until now. It was really interesting - detailing not just the Dixie Chicks controversy, but the history of country music and politics, going all the way back to World War I & II. I learned a ( Read more... )

Woah...Leno's crossing the picket lines, too? Damn. I guess I'll be boycotting him. He's got to be a royal douchebag to do such things.

Yes, we have Willie Nelson and Tim McGraw. I'm shocked that McGraw still gets played on country radio. Of course, if they didn't play Nelson, I could well imagine the riots that would occur. That said, these days, the closest I get to country music is Southern Rock, with perhaps a little ZZ Top mixed in for flavor.

Leno is *such* a douchebag to cross the picket lines, and it really surprised me after he seemed to support them so much, bringing them donuts and whatnot. Bleh.

Tim McGraw is very savvy about his politics. He didn't come out as a Democrat until he'd become very successful, and he mostly stayed out of the 2004 election until the end. After it was over he was very much like "now we all need to come together as a country" blah blah blah unitycakes. Also, he hasn't really criticized the president, except after Katrina and his approval ratings started really going in the shitter.

Willie Nelson gets away with being a liberal the same way he gets away with being a pothead and an environmentalist - he's WILLIE NELSON. He's just a living legend like that.

Aren't ZZ Top like hardcore republicans? I know they've played a couple republican fundraisers or whatnot. Oh well, I still love "Tush" and "Cheap Sunglasses".

It wouldn't shock me if ZZ Top were hardcore Republicans. After all, they are from Houston. But yeah, Tush, Cheap Sunglasses, and La Grange are enough to let them live.

They Performed at the 2004 RNC, but I can't find anything to support them being hardcore republicans.

Allison is a Republican. Maybe that's what makes her a "Happy Girl," her favorite song of mine! =)

Yeah, but do you have any links or articles or quotes to back that up?

Sorry to pop your delusion, but I can't find any documentation in either direction about her political affiliation, with one possible exception: she performed at the White House during Bill Clinton's tenure.
