I think he's running for the reason anybody runs: they honestly think they're the best person for the job. And he's third in the polls behind Hillary and Obama, fourth if Gore (not running) is included, but CNN said a few minutes ago that he's first in the polls in Iowa.
He's my favorite.

I am not excited to hear about Edwards being #1 in Iowa. Winning in Iowa is the only reason that loser Kerry was chosen as the Democratic nominee. I really don't want to have to settle for another loser in Edwards next year too.

Kerry was chosen in Iowa because he was seen as "safe" - he had a supposedly unimpeachable record as a war hero. What the caucusers didn't foresee was that the Bush campaign would try to paint Kerry as a coward and a fake, while selling deserter Bush as a hero... and that Kerry would completely fail to fight back.
I'm actually a doubter that Clinton can win - in my mind, she alienates even the people so fed up with the Republican Party that they might vote for a Dem, and plenty of Dems dislike her. And those people could vote for McCain, who is erroneously perceived as a maverick Republican. Meanwhile, some doubt she could win purely on the basis of sexism, or that Obama could win in a country still infested with racism. Hillary could be the safe candidate, but she could still be a loser.
It all depends on how they run, honestly.

But damned if the way they're handling it doesn't make me love them even more.
